It's not the religions themselves, it's the people that are taking things too far that are the problem. I'm Roman Catholic—albeit, not a super religious one, but nevertheless, I still identify with that religion—but I certainly don't discriminate and judge other people for what they believe in or don't believe in. I mean, I'm gay and Christian: literally polar opposites. I can't speak to people of other religions because I'm not educated in them, but I can tell you that Christianity teaches love, peace, and unity. Of course, there are crazy people out there that take things way too far and try to force their religions down other people's throats, which is totally uncalled for and unnecessary, but religion is not suppose to be like. It's not the religion, it's the people. By you saying "I'm not going to let them adopt or naturally have children so that they can brainwash them" is just as bad as saying "I don't want to have a gay child because they're sinful and immoral and disgusting". You are tarnishing a group of people, and no, I'm not saying this because I'm Christian, or to defend ignorant people. I'm saying this because you are generalizing a population and that in it of itself is not right. I studied the religions for a long time, I read the books more than once, worked hard to understand every sentence there, studied the cultures and more and I have a degree in religious studies at the university. I don't know if you ever read the old testament or the new (I guess no for the Quran) but the state that the religions now are becoming exactly how "god" wanted them to be and how he stressed it in the books, there are laws and rules that defines the way you must worship this god in those books and how society should work. so to say it's not the religion, it's the people - it's ignorance. It is the religion, it is how it's written that god wants it! You, even you, considered as a sinner to god, not because you are gay, but because you worship not in the way that it wants! Now tell me, if it's the people, where is god to come and tell them to stop? that this is not how he wants them to behave? where is he? he can do another flood in a second, but the last time he fixed society was thousands of years ago, since then it didn't show up here at all and didn't even punish us.. so there are 2 option: 1. He approves the behavior of his followers (discrimination, murder, fanaticism etc) 2. he doesn't exist. The choice is yours. If you really want to expend your knowledge, read the books, dig inside them to understand exactly, what is religion because it's nothing but hate. Yes there is love, but only to the right religious people, there's no love for gays, for slaves, for women, for non religious and so on.. I was discriminated first btw, so I'm allowed to discriminate those who discriminating me since I was born because I'm gay. The Bible also condemns eating shrimp, wearing clothes of different material, men cutting their hair, etc., yet I don't see people condemning those things into oblivion. [For the record, I'm going to use Christianity just because it's the thing I know best] Yes, I am aware that the Bible and other holy books are very destructive and depict violence, but Jesus Christ was the one who taught us about love and mercy. He's the one that died for the sins of humanity: past, present, and future. He is all-loving and all-forgiving and merciful. That's what I mean when I talk about how fundamentally, Christianity is suppose to be about good. I see you talking about the laws and rules behind Christianity, and how they're "fundamentally bad", but I yet to see you talk about the plethora of other passages and scripture in the Bible where it talks about love and unity. There are also different interpretations of the Bible and how to go about it. To take a 100% literal interpretation of it would be ignorant, and as someone who has supposedly studied religious studies in a university, that's ignorant. And in discussing God and the question of "Where is he when there is so much suffering within the world?" I mean, it's been debated for ages, and no one will no exactly why—I'm going to be completely honest with you. However, I think the main reason is that God allowed free will. I'm not saying their right by any means, none whatsoever, but it's a matter of God allowing suffering not because he wants it, but because it's a battle of the good vs. evil. What I was taught in R.E. was that it was the work of Satan and his manipulation of Adam and Eve that brought evil into the world, and with that came sin and all that. The problem I that I have with what you said isn't so much the religious aspects, though. Like I said, I'm not a religious individual, and nor am I defending those religious fanatics that try to force religion down people's throats and stuff. The problem I have is that you generalized a whole group of people. I know many religious people, and they're all loving and supporting—I'm even out to some of them, and they treat me like equals and love and support me just the same. Now, that's not to say that everyone's loving and supporting, but you can't just generalize the religion and say: everyone who follows this religion is inherently bad and immoral. You are literally being an ignorant person by generalizing a whole population. Even if you fundamentally disagree with everything they're standing for, which is completely fine and okay, my point is that you can't just paint the community with this giant paintbrush. Also, this "they discriminated me, so I can discriminate them" thing is so childish. Trust me, trust me, I have had my fair share of discrimination and mistreatment, but what good does it do to keep fighting one another? To stand up for yourself, to tell people "This is who I am!" is amazing, it's awesome, and that's what you should do, but if you're going to just discriminate against another people group, that does no one any good and no one any justice. You're right, not everything can be taken at face value: Jesus has said that he spoke in parables in order to confuse outsiders. Although I disagree with what you said about free will. God created good and evil, He is the all-knowing God, but He created Satan anyway, so shouldn't He be held responsible? He gave "free will" to us all, but the consequences of not believing is Hell - that is about as much free will as a thief gives its victim at gunpoint. Is it fair for us to be doomed to pay for what Adam and Eve has done? They are long gone and we are not them, forcing us to face the consequences of what they have done is cruel. I'm not saying that religious people are bad, but I do believe that religion in itself is not good.

I completely agree. The free will argument just doesn't make sense, along with many "explanations" people give for the Bible, in my opinion. If we are good people, yet we will be sent to Hell for not worshipping this God or for worshipping the wrong God, I believe it would be God who has disappointed us. Eternal punishment for not believing is excessive, and it seems like the same punishment is the consequence for all the sins... an eye for an eye doesn't really apply to God, does it? Justice and love cannot always coexist, although I really think that the biblical God is neither.

Our minds can't accept the idea of not existing anymore. Religions help to make the idea of death more comforting Humans fear the unknown. So believing that you know and understand something more, makes it less scary. Death is loss of consciousness.
