LOTB was an anomaly, and a lot of people attributed its success to radio payola. Exceptions to the rules will always exist. The last solo female number one was Adele's "Hello" in 2015. :toofunny:

Love On The Brain is actually a good song though, at least to me it is, I think it's one of Rihanna's best songs. And I saw a lot of people become a fan of it once they listened to it. Was it radio payola? Who knows but I don't think Rihanna needed that, she had more than enough success in 2016.

Edit: Has there been a year dominated by women though ? It's mostly half and half and most of what you hear on the radio are songs featuring another artist.

2/3 Rihanna hits were featuring males. Work and TIWYCF both feature a rapper and DJ respectively. Why wasn't Kiss It Better a smash? Into You by Ariana would've been a top 5 hit in the 2011 musical climate, but it didn't crack top ten.

Until Gaga goes back to her roots, there is no such thing as female pop :nails:

Rihanna's image and music is extremely malleable. She doesn't need to conform to the sound of her old hits to land a new one. Sometimes what ruins an artist is that people are not ready to adhere to a new sound so they reject it. This creates a kind of paradox because people also don't want artists to release music that is sonically similar to their old hits.

TL;DR, Rihanna is in the best situation possible.

Needed Me was also a sucessful single, it spent a lot of weeks on the top 10 and got some radio play as far as I remember. Kiss It Better was probably overshadowed by Work because it was still going hard. I don't really follow Ariana's career that much but I know that 3 or 4 of her singles were everywhere during the entire year her album has been out.

It's just a trend. Things won't be like this forever or even for long probably.

Cold as ice cream, but still as sweet.

Reading all these excuses/responses in this thread so far has given me a good laugh. What's popular is popular because it's popular. There's no ifs or becauses... you guys are over complicating things. :laughga:

Gurl no, this post gave me a good laugh :smh:

Nothing is popular for popularity's sake :smh:

Trends  reflects the current social and economic state of any given culture or society. Analyzing trends is a CAREER. Labels do it all the time. It's how they market and sell artists to the masses. All businesses do it. It's what marketing and advertising is based on.

Nothing is just popular. Question everything. Analyze everything. Otherwise you're just another sheep that buys into every overpriced trend, without knowing why.

Most trends are only trendy because they were marketed to be so. If any phone will do, why an iPhone? If any laptop will do, why a Mac? If any dress will do why Versace?

The over analysis and excuses in this thread :rip:

It's just what's in right now.

People listen to whatever they like and streaming is showing what most people actually listen to.

It just so happens many males are gaining prominence rn but that doesn't mean your precious Pop girls are over :smh:

You're obviously missing the point here. We know "what's in right now", what we're trying to understand is "why" it's in. To put it another way, we're just trying to derive a process from a pattern. It's a simple form of analogy, not an "excuse" for our "precious pop girls".

If DJ's are taking over [I don't consider the Djs we hear on radio, actual dj's] then I wanna see females come up too! Rebecca & Fiona deserved so much recognition for their bops

Because people like these artists.

Just like they liked Gaga, Katy etc. in past years.

Some of the theories here had me cackling. "Girls go along with what their boyfriends listen to" LMFAO. Or maybe they like all this music? I know plenty of girls who love rap and all the top male artists.

People here act like music is over because the Pop girls they adore aren't on top.

Mainstream music trends change all the time.

Things are never as simple as that though. Music trends are influenced by cultural trends. I think men are desperately clinging to their masculinity in today's age and rap has taken prominence, and rap encourages overcompensation of masculinity. I love rap, but latching onto the most superficial elements of rap music shows that men feel emasculated. I'm looking at this from an American perspective. Guys who aren't comfortable in their masculinity would never listen to a Gaga, Madonna or Kylie Minogue.
