ARTPOP and KP4: similarities

I have been thinking exactly the same thing. Prism was so like BTW, it's actually scary: first and third singles being hits, singles #2, #4 and #5 flopping (although Gaga had more US top tens whereas Katy had two #1's then mere top 20s and 40s), they had a very similar looking tour stage and Katy went to a lot of the same regions Gaga did and kinda 'went everywhere' like Gaga, the albums sold similar amounts and were considered a step down from their last big success. So, with all this in mind, it stood to reason that Katy was due an AP era next...

I think it's amazingly parallel how Applause and CTTR peaked in exactly the same positions in the UK and US. Now a problematic rap verse on the second single is just too much. Add in the fact that the second single was around the time Gaga seemed really "off" and Katy is now going through the same kinds of odd behaviour...

As the era progresses, we'll have to track the similarities. I somehow highly doubt that Capitol will cancel the BA music video (they'd better not, I can't wait to see that mess!) and I also doubt they'd cancel the era after single #3, that's a bit too extreme. But there's things like...what kind of critical reception will it get? (AP's was mixed-mediocre and Katy, even at her most critically adored, cannot do better than average reviews), will it have a tour and if so, will it be a success? (AP had one that pulled in about $83 million and the way things are going, Katy's tour will be similarly small and it's unlikely she'll tour Asia considering they've paid her dust this era) will it get Grammy nominations? (AP didn't get any but Katy has had nominations for every era even though she's never won) and will she stand a chance for a comeback after this? (I doubt it, I think this might well be her last album as a huge name in pop).

Applause was a bigger hit than CTTR, want it? And DWUW had instant interest.

Katy's first two singles haven't had near the interest that the first two singles of ARTPOP had.

That's very true. Applause was even used in a Kia commercial. Applause was also more widely promoted, so more people heard it and bought it. Katy has only done 3 live performances of CTTR thus far, which, for a lead single, even by today's promo standards, is pretty bad. Maybe Capitol thought it would sell based on name recognition alone but they now realise how wrong they were. And the whole reason that DWUW even became a single was because the public responded to it so much better than the official single, Venus, that the label switched them. And I'd be prepared to stake my life on DWUW outperforming BA on the US charts when all is said and done.

It's nice to see that I'm not just a delusional fan by thinking Applause was bigger. If you look at the statistics, it really was. The only thing that differs is that CTTR has more video views and likes, but hey, Vevo hasn't been the undisputed way of evaluating whether a song was a hit or not because so many flops get a 100million views these days with no problem at all and a rabid young fanbase will guarantee a ton of refreshed views 24/7 and a lot of likes whereas those with older fanbases struggle in that regard but it doesn't mean that they're not as loved.

KP4 isn't even out yet.  We don't even have a name for it.

Some of these singles might not even make it on the final KP4.  Kind of like Anti.

We can't compare an album that came 3 years ago with an album that hasn't even been released yet.

Sit down and chill

I highly doubt she's going to write these songs off as buzz singles and leave them off the album. She said in that BRITS interview that she started writing the album in June and she was still working on themes for it and it was coming along. I believe she said somewhere that CTTR was the first single from her new album as well. Basically, she's been working on this album for about 11 months. That is far too much time devoted to a project to merely abandon it because the first two songs underperformed. If it took 11 months to get this far, that suggests it would take 6 months to rework it, another 11 months to re-write it completely. Her last album came out three and a half years ago. She's taken far too long a break considering that the album wasn't exactly a sales monster. 3.5 year breaks can be the death knell for a popstar's career, look at Xtina, Nelly, Gwen, Fergie...

There's no need to be so rude to the OP. Their ideas are very well constructed and they're not the first to say them. It doesn't matter that AP came out 3 years ago, they're getting compared because they're each artist's fourth album and they're going through similar success paths.

Who on here hated ARTPOP? Literally everyone was living for how good of an album it was. :emma:

The only people that come to mind are some of the chartsters and those of us that preferred the SwineFest version of certain songs - but then again, the album as a whole was praised to the gods.

I like ARTPOP, even tho i do think it's a creative mess. What I truly hate on that album is Aura intro, ew still listen to the version where i cut off that gross part :D  Damn, still bitter about DWYW mess, it had such a potential + Sexxx dreams never being a single </3

Won't say a word about KP4 since I don't like her music or listen to her!

ARTPOP had tons of love on this site when it dropped so I don't know why people are pushing the narrative that it was hated lmao.

This. It was received a lot better than Joanne (although I personally love that one too)

I was here and "everybody" did not hate it, even after it "flopped"...became one of the top ten selling albums and tours of the year.

It is made in a way to be completely about sex if you listen to the song without knowing Gaga's mental view on the song.

DWUW is about not letting the media and critics get to Gaga's Heart and not letting it get to her head. It basically states that "take pics of me and body shame I don't care, I won't let it get to my heart or my mind".
