Being a younger one here, would you mind just summing up his public image? I just remember him as the music icon who died too soon.

The previous people who quoted you summed it up. But I'll say this: even though celebs have fallen from grace since the beginning of time and the media has always been unkind to them, he is the first celebrity the media truly destroyed and they haven't been so cruel to anyone else (this is not me saying that the allegations were false. But the fact remains at the time that they were unproven.) Britney and Bieber were treated like Gods compared to what happened to MJ.

Britney by far, and then Mariah. Both had amazing comebacks though without Circus and Emancipation of Mimi.

I agree with the results so far - Michael Jackson is the worst (nothing worse than multiple child molestation charges, etc) and Britney second.

Because of the child molestation allegations (and his own eccentricities), he become a laughingstock of America. It was impossible to go to the supermarket in the 90's without seeing his face on the tabloids every single week with some outrageous claim.

As a result, and the widespread panic that he was a child molester, that it became "taboo" to publicly describe yourself as an MJ fan. It was not until his death that you started to see people publicly acknowledge being a fan, let alone a stan.

I'm 25, so my first memory of Michael is:

his music in the 90's, Hearing "You are Not Alone" on the radio.

Then my perception of him became the guy with the weird face, who used to be major

And then my opinion of him in the mid-00's was freak-pedophile

Like watch movies and tv shows from that time, they ALL **** on Michael.

i.e. Scary movie 3

mj03.jpg

And that was pretty much his reputation until he died

Its kinda crazy how fast perception of him changed after he died.

My mom always told me she wished i was around in the 80's to have seen how great he was.

Both my parents say of any singer they've even seen, no one has been as big as Michael was in the 80's, not even Madonna

I'm surprised no one's really talking about Janet. I don't know if she had it the worst, but she definitely had it pretty awful. After having her breast exposed to the entire world at the Superbowl by Justin Timberlake -through no fault of her own- she got sooo much backlash. She was blacklisted from both radio and TV. She was banned from attending the Grammys that year (but Justin was still allowed to perform). She had to withdraw from a documentary about Lena Horne that she was scheduled to be in. Pretty much anything she did after that was a flop, while Justin's career went on just fine. Poor girl got exposed and live TV and she was the one who got punished for it, which makes absolutely no sense.

Britney and Mariah had legendary meltdowns, but both rose back to the plate and have been steady ever since. MJ and Whitney unfortunately hadn't the time before their deaths to really "reestablish" themselves again; their legacies, though, speaks bounds about the influence they've had on popular music and pop culture, as a whole.

Janet was done dirty over that nip slip, so I won't even go there.

Gaga's never really fallen off; ARTPOP was still a massive success, as was Joanne, so it's not really a debate, and she has no place among these names. Iggy, more or less, was a one-hit-wonder with very little impact on pop culture or anything, so for separate reasons, she doesn't belong here either. Katy's been a top pop girl for so long, so seeing how this era is going to go, she may be a candidate. JB, though, has had his many ups and downs. I still don't think he's quite established himself as being a stable superstar. He seems to hate his fans, and he acts quite pompous/entitled a lot of the time, so he still may be mid-breakdown. Time will tell.

For nostalgia's sake, I'll say Britney - her "demise" was a tragic example of mainstream media ripping to shreds a vulnerable woman at their expense for tabloid fodder. It's a blessing we still have her among us, to be honest. But in a more contemporary sense, I'd go with Justin - he hasn't done anything to really reestablish himself as being worthy of the praise he gets.

It really pisses me off, how Janet was literally blacklisted following that incident, yet JT was allowed to succeed. It's unforgivable how all that was handled, to be honest.

I agree with the part about their strong legacies, but I disagree that they didn't have "time" to reestablish themselves.  Michael died 16 years after the child molestation charges first surfaced.  Honestly, I don't think he would have ever been able to really "reestablish" himself properly after that.  And Whitney had plenty of time to get her act together and she didn't.  (Sorry.)

Michael faced the biggest downfall of a star. Eveyone laughed at him and they even joked about him or used his face on Scary Movie as a child kidnapper/molester.

I mean this is way more cruel than just having your albums flopping. Britney came close to his downfall too but she partly recovered.

I more so meant, time wasn't on their side. They were both astronomical stars in the 80s with varying, but substantial enough, success in the 90s. By the 2000s, they were both past their prime and undoubtedly going through their own rough patches - between Jackson's court cases with yet another slew of child abuse allegations and Whitney's ongoing battle against drug abuse, it would've taken a miracle for them to regain the glory they'd seen at their individual peaks. Unfortunately, neither had the time to reestablish themselves as the titans they once were, and were taken prematurely.

So, in short, although they did have some years following their public rock bottoms, time was inevitably on neither of their sides.

Britney, by far. She went through unimaginable situations during the mid-2000s, and people thought she would never return to sanity. However, she defeated those odds and is now looked at as one of the the most important figures in recent culture. :firega:

MJ by far, the first celebrity destroyed by the tabloids, they had no mercy on him

I would say Janet. But I cannot understand when all of this started. It can't be just the SB controversy back in the day though! Other artists have gotten away with more!
