I'm genuinely feeling sorry for her now. This song is flopping in all the major music markets. The first day of sales is when it should be at its most successful but it just isn't. Her mature song underperformed, her generic sexy song is already flopping and the album isn't even out yet. Katy has only experienced flopping in the middle of or the end of an era, never at the beginning. Poor girl is watching this era fall apart before her eyes, knowing that nothing she can do now can stop it. Tonight, I watched a tray of chips fall off the cooker all by themselves but I knew that any attempt to stop it would be worthless because I would only catch the tray and the rest of the chips would fall and I would burn my hands if I tried. So, I just stood there and screamed as it fell. That must be what Katy feels like right now, only it's with her career.

She's moved to a sound that isn't wildly acknowledged by the GP as a 'katy perry' generic sound. That's why she's failing. But I don't think she will rebound from this era the way that Gaga has because Gaga is a multi-faceted artist who has many tricks up her sleeve whereas Kay doesn't

After CTTR, I was honestly underwhelmed and I expected more. I feel like the song has its ups and downs, but its far from a bop. CTTR was catchy and I liked it instantly but this one..

I think Katy thought she was going to coast in and drop some #1's but it's been 4 years since she made an impact in pop music. Not gonna happen in 2017. Gaga had to work her ass off, change directions, find things that worked for her and her unique brand after ARTPOP. Katy will have to write and make mature music and be more in the process of making that music. That cutesy stuff only works on young 20 somethings and even that gets old to them. Not sure if she can change course in the middle of this era. Her new reality has set in.

Honestly, during the ARTPOP/Prism era I was like

'Katy Perry's next album is not going to do well... She can't be releasing #1 after #1 forever. She is going to have just as hard a fall, if not harder, than Gaga.'

and then she performed at the superbowl and I was like

'Hmm, well if she releases soon her next single should go #1 and maybe she can actually salvage a decent era, after that I'd maintain that the one after that won't do so well though'

That didn't happen... She performed then Bruno, then Coldplay, then Gaga and her SB performance was just... forgotten. She couldn't capitalise off the hype, so it seems like it was the original prediction that was right. 

She needs a reinvention... That's the difficult thing for her I think because whenever she has deviated from her sugary dance-pop hits it hasn't gone very well. People jammed to Roar and Dark Horse and the radio ate it up - but Unconditionally was the single in between the two that nobody really cared much about. Now that people have tired of the sugary pop hits, where can she go? 

Gaga was able to detour into Jazz with Tony Bennett that gave her another #1 album, a Grammy and a bunch of new opportunities like The Sound of Music Oscars performance. That reinvention also gave her a platform at The Superbowl to sing the National Anthem that went so well she became the Halftime performer the next year around.  Gaga has also been able to dip her toes into the acting world, winning a Golden Globe for her role as The Countess, and scoring the lead role beside Bradley Cooper in ASIB.

Gaga has kept herself a relevant pop cultural figure by expanding her brand and surprising the world with different facets of her talents. Katy has expertly crafted this pop persona her entire career, it will be interesting to see if she can break from that or expand it out to keep herself relevant.
