Private prison gets $110 Million contract in Texas

The Trump administration has awarded its first federal contract for a new immigrant detention center to be built in Texas.

The $110 million deal went to GEO Group, a private prison company that runs 143 facilities worldwide. In a news release, GEO said it would build and run the 1,000-bed facility outside Houston under a 10-year contract that would "generate approximately $44 million in annualized revenues and returns on investment."

The Trump administration has been working on plans for its promised immigration "deportation force," including hiring 5,000 new border guards and nearly doubling the number of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency workers.

Immigrant rights groups were shocked at news of the new GEO contract, partly due to the fact that GEO, which is the second-largest ICE contractor, currently has 3,000 empty beds in the U.S. On top of that, GEO already runs another detention center in the same Texas town where the new facility is slated for construction.

Prisons don't make a profit. Private or public, doesn't matter. Prisons do not make a profit. 

The construction company that builds the structure is paid by the government. The government also pays a company to make jumpsuits, food trays, steel bars, etc.

But after the initial contract is make and paid out (and companies bid to do the best job for the lowest price), they stop "making" money.

I just wanna say that a few years ago, members of this site (and the public) were saying how awful the conditions were at immigration detriment centers.

Now you guys are complaining because Trump is actually building one that is being enough to accommodate people?

Immigration detainment camps under Obama were so small, people and children had to sleep on the floor and families were broken up because they couldn't be kept in the same facility.

Chose your fights you want to have with the Trump administration wisely. That's all I'm saying.

Mother Jones has long been sniffing around private prisons (culminating with a journalist publishing an exposé after a four-month undercover investigation in the prison system), and recently, it reported that Corrections Corporation of America, the second-largest for-profit prison system in the country, netted $3,300 per prisoner in 2015. A 2012 contract between the Arizona Department of Corrections and MTC, another private corrections company, guaranteed a rate of nearly $18,000 per prisoner per year, according to Think Progress.

That is money the government pays to the contractor.

That is not a profit. Nobody pays to go to prison, those are tax dollars. 

If it were a public prison, the government would be paying more.

Private companies are always more efficient that publicly run ones, that's just a fact of life. The government has to pay public prisons way more than they do private prisons. That's why private prisons exist in the first place... otherwise they'd all be public...
