Gaga used to change her style twice a day.

Your point?

Gaga is not an attention freak that changes her style every day in order to stay relevant! She accompanies her style with her great vocal diversity/ability and stage performance. Katy who?

Except that's exactly what Gaga has always done shamelessly :giggle:

It's not just her hairstyle. She is desperately trying to stay relevant by copying others (Gaga, Miley etc).

She really needs to find her REAL artistic self and style. She is so f____ng unoriginal!

I think she's a real good comedian tho!

She didn't dress herself like this you know? The stylist on set for this shoot dressed Katy in that outfit, it's the exact look that was on the runway. Katy isn't copying Gaga, the whole shoot was dedicated to Comme des Garçons because that's the next theme for the Met Gala, the same Met Gala that Katy is on the board for this year. Stop trying to make "copying Gaga" happen, it's not going to happen.

I mean it is kinda super interesting that people here are like "Kim Kardashian clone!!" "Brooke Candy should sue ha!" "Iggy???" and then deny that white people make black styles cool and trendy :smh:

I don't want to get into fights with people like "But black people don't own a hair style!!!" cause that's not even what I'm saying - I just think it's interesting that Katy Perry wears a style popular in the black community and everyone starts saying she is copying other white girls and acting like those girls own that style :smh:

They used popular people who had this hairstyle.

You provided us pictures of some girls that I don't even know.

I don't remember Beyonce, Rihanna, Nicki or some other popular black girl having this hairstyle, but if they had it, I am sure that they would be included.

Illuminati

She looked good in her IG photos, I love the look and that she's trying to save her career by going back to long hair lol.

But I hope she realizes the black community will not be happy about it cause for some reason that's beyond me they are very protective of certain hairstyles. We've been sharing cultures for years now especially ever since the globalization started and it's like we're going backwards now making a big deal over someone's hairstyle.

I wish people would just not care about **** like that lol

I don't think any of this is relevant to my point though honestly

The point is that you can't be here like "lol she is copying this white girl, this white girl, this white girl and this white girl" when it's a common black hairstyle and these artists (most of them like Brooke Candy and Iggy are rappers and Kim K is married to one) are clearly taking inspiration from the urban, black community.

I showed a range of pictures that drove home that point that it was a popular hairstyle for African American women and that it wasn't white (or black) celebrities that made this style popular... It's been popular since forever...

Brooke Candy can't trade mark this hairstyle, neither can Kim, neither can Iggy, neither can Xtina or any of the other girls mentioned here... They are not the ones starting a 'trend' they are just wearing popular black hairstyles  This is Katy trying to look urban, this is her trying to emulate the style of black girls - this isn't Katy trying to look like Brooke Candy.

It would be like if Taylor Swift and Britney Spears started wearing afros... If Katy started wearing an afro too - it would be weird to be like "Lol Taylor Swift alert" or "Britney Spears should sue..." they don't own the hairstyle, it's a natural black hairstyle - it wouldn't even matter if there are little to no photos of Beyonce, Rihanna and Nicki Minaj wearing afros, there are plenty of black women that do because that's how their hair grows :smh:

Also for the record:

Beyonce wore them for her Formation video

Rihanna likes to rock the style as much as any of the other people mentioned:

and a wealth of black female artists have worn the style:

Here is an article I found on Teen Vogue of all places that I think is actually rather relevant to the points I'm trying to make: http://www.teenvogue.com/story/boxer-braids-hairstyle-history

"This week, I got a laugh when I read the New York Post article that claimed Sasha Obama’s hairstyle at the White House State Dinner was inspired by UFC fighters. It's completely laughable at best...but downright dismissive at worst...

The first daughter joins a raft of high-profile beauties sporting a version of the now-ubiquitous boxer braids. Fueled by celebrities and the popularity of UFC fighters, the center-parted reverse French-braid style has surged back into fashion. The woven look, dating back to ancient Africa, has been worn by celebs including the Kardashian clan.”

While UFC fighters (and female basketball players, and students, and moms...) have been rocking french braids and cornrows for years, apparently nobody told the Post that Sasha’s so-called “trendy” look has never gone out of style, particularly in the Black community (and no...I don’t mean “ancient Africa”).

Never mind the Obama girls have worn cornrows before, or that most of the early 2000s were filled with celebs like Alicia Keys, Tyra Banks, Ludacris, Bow Wow, and even Justin Timberlake rocking the style, the real reason the Post, and other publications are so fascinated with the HOT NEW TREND! is because white women have finally caught on.

Just like plump lips and big butts are now en vogue because of the popularity of the Kardashians, and folks are perfectly happy buying dark brown skin from a bottle, the rush to link Sasha’s very black, very classic hairstyle to Katy Perry or UFC Fighters or anybody else but the black women and girls she grew up around feels very deliberate......

One reason we continue to face such obstacles is because the mainstream media never actually sees us. Sure, our celebrities set trends that become popular once other people do it, but the glut of black female Youtubers who’ve been giving braiding tutorials — for years — is pretty much invisible to those who think “boxer braids” are new, or “KKW Signature braids” are actually a thing.

To be clear, everyone can rock french braids, extensions, cornrows, and candy-colored hair, but let’s not buy into the idea that this “trend” is new, or that these celebrities made it hot. As Zendaya recently pointed out, “'Braids are not new. Black women have been wearing braids for a very long time. Another problem is it became new and fresh and fun, because it was on someone else other than a black woman. You know what I mean? So that is the frustration.”

Yes, Zendaya, that’s exactly it."

Wow how butthurt you can be about hairstyle.

Like, you could just attatch picture of Beyonce and Rihanna and say she is pulling Beyonce and Rihanna and we would all agree.

Imagine if someone posted picture of Beyonce with new straight hairstyle and people start to compare her with Rihanna's hairstyle. And then some white person runs to write ''Rihanna and Beyonce can't trademark it because straight hair comes from white comunity!!!1''

Isn't that stupid?

I'm not butthurt :smh:

I made a simple observation that a lot of people were running to this thread talking about how Katy is a Kim Kardashian wannabe or talking about how Brooke Candy should sue - like... these girls don't have a trademark on this style and they didn't make it trendy, they are just sporting black hair styles that have been popular for a very long time. It's weird to see people act like this is some unique hairstyle and that Katy is copying all these white girls... It's a popular hairstyle, black women have worn this style for a very long time - it's still a popular style. Kim/Brooke/Iggy didn't make this hair 'trendy' or popular... They didn't invent this style... You can't claim Katy is copying these people.

Your straight haired argument makes no sense - nobody is running into threads like "OMG Nicki is copying Beyonce with straight hair - Nicki should sue!" Nobody is out there acting like straight hair is some new trend because a bunch of black females have been seen sporting straight hair... Like I've said in every post here - I'm not saying black women 'own' this hairstyle, i'm not even saying white girls can't sport it - it's just bizarre seeing people act like this hair is some new trend and that Katy is ripping off the styles of all these white girls. This hair is nothing new, it's a style a whole lotta black women have worn since forever

It would be bizarre to see people act like Beyonce is copying Rihanna by having straight hair, it would be bizarre to see people act like Beyonce is jacking Rihanna's style by rocking straight hair, it would be bizarre to be like "Rihanna should sue" because she rocked straight hair first, it would be bizarre to see people act like Rihanna has some kind of trademark on straight hair :laughga:

It wouldn't be so bizarre (or stupid, as you put it) for someone in that thread to be like "Errr, straight hair isn't a new thing though? It's kinda been popular for a long time... They can't trademark straight hair... It's a thing a lot of people have worn for a very long time from before these girls where even born until today".

Have you even thought that the comparison with white blond popstars might arise because Katy is a white blonde popstar herself, hence the similarity is more striking :poot: and that not everything has to be a race issue :poot:

I'm really not sure what your point is or what part of what I'm saying you are trying to argue against.

My point is simple 'Boxer braids are a popular hairstyle. Kim doesn't own the trademark and didn't make it trendy. Brooke Candy doesn't own the trademark and didn't make it trendy. Iggy doesn't own the trademark and didn't make it trendy. These braids have been popular and trendy for a long time now... A lot of black women wear this style.'

People can't come in here with quotes like:

'This look SCREAMS "2015 Basic Instagram Wannabe Kardashian Thot"

"Lol wtf, Brook Candy sue this wannabe gangsta 16 year old looking rat"

and

"who dat who dat I I  G G oh no it's Katy"

Acting like these women own a trademark on this hair, like it's an original Kardashian/Brooke/Iggy look or like they made it trendy :smh: It's a popular hairstyle and it's been one since before these women rocked it.

Like I just said to another user - It would be weird for people to see a picture of Nicki Minaj with straight hair and be like "OMG Beyonce wannabe!!" or "Rihanna should sue this chick".... Like what? Beyonce didn't make straight hair trendy, Rihanna didn't make straight hair trendy, plenty of people rock straight hair and it's been a popular look since way before any of these girls started rocking straight hair. It would be weird to act as if Nicki Minaj is just following a 'straight hair' trend set by Beyonce and Rihanna..

Similarly, these double dutch braids have been something black women have worn since forever... It's nothing new... It's a popular hairstyle. It just seems weird to act as if the Kardashians or Brooke Candy have this unique hair and that Katy is just following the trends that these other white girls have set.

I don't think anyone was serious in claiming that people should sue her for the look - then again, I can't read mind (but so can't you).

These comments all seem to suggest that Katy Perry looks very similar to Brooke Candy (don't even know who she is, only heard one song from her, but from the picture someone posted, she really does), or to people who are apparently well known for that hairstyle (Kardashian). Pointing out that the look has roots in the black community is completely irrelevant to all these comments. I'm not saying you should've kept it for yourself, I'm just saying I see no reason to quote users who made comparisons on appearances with a history of the look, because it had nothing to do with what they were saying and it just looks like the usual tired racebait.

Posting pics of random blak girls out of random blogs, or a still of Rihanna on a vacation won't really change the fact that Kate Perry literally looks like this Brook Candy girl in the pic.
