GQ: Don't Cheer For Hernandez Suicide

Kinda my sentiments about it. 

 

It is very easy to crack jokes and feel superior in the wake of Hernandez’s death. I know this because I am a professional Internet heckler. But there is something deeply ****ed up about a bunch of people cheering for suicide, especially a prison suicide. Not only does it reduce human life down to a tax burden (that, again, will not be relieved), but it suggests that the worst of us can never possibly be redeemed and are better off discarded. And then where do you draw the line? How can you tell which prisoners will turn the corner and make some amends for their crimes—leaving a trace of good in the world before standing in judgment before God—and which never will? Who else passes the Suicide Test?

 

And that’s horseshit. Suicide is not a proper law enforcement strategy. It should not be a SOLUTION to anything, especially when the prisoner in question has loved ones that will be impacted for life by what happened. It was clearly a longshot, but there still could have been some good to come from Aaron Hernandez’s story, and it does no one any good to root for that potential to be snuffed out. Because when you reduce the worst of us down to mere animals, you become a bit more of an animal yourself.

 

Remember, a daughter lost her father.

Exactly. Our prison systems aren't (ideally) meant to banish people to a realm where they are sub-human. They're meant to rehabilitate those who have committed even the most heinous crimes. While it is true some definitely cannot ever be rehabilitated, it doesn't mean we should treat all prisoners as such. 

Aaron Hernandez murdered a man and, in the process, destroyed two worlds: those who were loved ones of the victim and those who were loved ones of Hernandez. This only makes an already sad, depressing, and unfortunate situation more desolate. This is not a happy ending. His suicide will do little if anything to comfort the victim's loved ones, while further hurting those close to Hernandez.

I got into this with my Mom who was one who "cheered" about it which was shocking considering my father, her HUSBAND died of suicide/self inflicted GSW. I feel for his daughter and his family. I can't feel good about it because the entire situation is awful for EVEYONE. Suicide is confusing and the emotions you feel after are ...... I can't put it into words really. This I guess you could say "triggered" me and I'm not one to use that term. It's a shitty thing all around.

I'm sorry, I can only imagine people viewing a suicide as a 'positive' makes it worse. I don't understand how people can value human life so little, especially considering they dislike Aaron for taking one? Seems hypocritical.

That being said, suicide is a serious issue that does not get spoken about enough in terms of prevention and the aftermath, which leaves permanent scars on those left behind. I'm sorry you've lived through a suicide of a loved one and hope you can continue to heal.

Thank you. It's been just about 4 years and today reading this kinda smacked me in the face and opened up that wound . Which never really heals.  I try to speak out as much as I can. As someone who is left behind asking why? That's the hardest thing. Why? It's something I'll never know.

It's hard to read people thinking it's a positive thing. With that said I know some times it's instinct for people to feel that way with people who have done heinous things. Like I said it's terrible all around.
