Thoughts on no vocal tuning?

When Gaga was promoting C2C she said she'll never let the producer/engineer/label/etc alter or autotune her voice again. It made sense to go that route with the music on Joanne. It fits the whole vibe. But how do you feel about it on dance/pop tracks?

I feel like it worked really well on IWYL- I think the only vocal tuning was done on the background vocals near the end. However, I don't know how I feel about it on The Cure. A part of me feels like it sounds very demo-y and unfinished, but the other part of me feels like it sounds fresh and organic. It's just weird because her "signature sound" is very electronic (including her voice) and now she's releasing a heavily-produced track with stripped down vocals. As basic as you think the song maybe, there are very strong undertones to this song that make Gaga stand out. What do you think?

P.S. Stream "The Cure" on Spotify :staymad:

The vocals do sound unpolished/demo-like. The chorus needs louder background vocals and vocoder with lower octave vocals. Not to mention the instrumental needs a bit of tuning during the chorus. In due time, when an instrumental and acapella reveals itself, it could be fixed.

Needless to say, the whole "I'll never let them AutoTune my voice" thing was a bit overdramatic, because there most certainly is pitch correction on Joanne and "The Cure", it's just very well-done and not tweaked to the point where it's noticeable (like, for instance, Emma Watson in B&TB, where you can't help but notice it).

Heavy correction would have stood out like a sore thumb on Joanne, but I actually don't mind it on EDM. Unlike a real guitar or piano, there's no chance for electronically produced music to be "out of tune", which explains why they go the extra mile to clean up vocals for that particular genre.

Gaga's problem has always been poor production choices, in my opinion.  It's what ruined the potential of ARTPOP to be a hit.  I love this new song, but it's unpolished and unfinished sounding.  Sorry.

Nailed it. That's what bugged me about the song, and I couldn't put my finger on it. Everything about the chorus sounds rather amateurish.

I'm all about no-autotune, but the reality of the industry is that you have to put out music that people can easily listen to if you want to get plays. I want Gaga to get plays, ergo I want her to release music with a high production budget which is spent partly on making the songs universally tolerable.

The simple truth is that if you listen to the songs on Joanne without your blinders on & with a trained ear, you can hear a number of sonic elements that explain people's disenchantment with it. "Perfect Illusion" GREW on us, particularly on those of us that loved Gaga enough to listen to it on repeat. We got used to it, and the rough edges were drilled into our memories and our subconsciouses expected them, and they stopped being rough for us. But for OTHER people, who hadn't yet heard the song, or who had only heard it a couple of times, casually, it wasn't an easy listen.

Radio programmers are epitomically risk averse. They noticed that people weren't digging it and they stopped giving it plays.

In my personal opinion, "The Cure" sounds like Gaga lyrics on a Justin Bieber Purpose track. I don't like it too much. BUT, Justin Bieber gets massive amounts of consistent radio airplay. It also sounds very much at home on the Chainsmokers' album, or on any number of other albums that are producing radio hits right now. It has all of the ingredients for a bland and perfectly NOW pop hit. It's a trend follower, rather than a trend-setter, but quite honestly, right now Gaga needs to follow the trends a bit if she wants to rebuild rapport with radio.

I think it fits the charm of the song and helps it stand out against the sterile trop-pop songs that have proceeded it  To each their own.

The verse before the final chorus seems a bit odd, as well. If she's been working on this song since the ARTPOP era, then...:emma:

Good song, nonetheless. Just bad handling.

I'm fine with autotuning Gaga's voice.  Even if it's at Cher-Believe level.  I honestly prefer to hear Gaga's voice a bit autotuned on her more electronic tracks.

Me too I think it sounds nice on her EDM tracks but obviously not on like Joanne type songs. I thought the way the backing vocals on bad romance were autotuned was very pleasant but the main vocals weren't as much so it was just the right amount, on The Cure I think I love the track just the way it is tbh maybe it's just because I can't imagine it being any different...

Shes obviously lied about the voice altering thing, because the da doo de doo's in John Wayne are obviously harshly edited

In a day full of messy posts, thank you for this! Agree with you 100%.

I completely agree! My biggest problem with ARTPOP was the production. Songs like Sexxx Dreams, MJH, Aura all could've been handled better. As much as I love DWUW, I there are a few parts in the production element that I did not like

When she talked about voice altering, she was talking about pitch correction, not necessarily different types of SFX or filters you can put on an audio track.
