Do they have a different constitution/government? Is what they're doing legal?

I don't really know, but I'm sure they do, just like each US state has different laws and all. They have like 2 governments or something, one is not recognized yet still operates for years. They are the definition of mess, together with North Korea

This is disgusting and terrifying.

Are we "rational"? It's horrible that some people of 2017 haven't learn from the mistakes of the ones from 1930.

this is the state of grace, this is the worthwhile fight

I'm not sure why so many people are surprised. Chechnya is predominantly muslim - countries with majority-muslim population have a vast record of imprisoning, torturing and executing gays. I guess people just got used to that bs coming from countries like Iran.

To those who wonder why they're doing it - religion.

It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!

Are they friends with Russia or China? If not, let's get with NATO and liberate the camps!

Chechnya is (a subject of) Russia like the state of Georgia is to US.

The leader of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, is a radical Islamic fundamentalist. Hatred for homosexuals is taught, in this instance it is taught by Islam.

Ramazan Kadyrov is first and foremost the most loyal to Putin, not to any god :laughga:

Guy hangs out with Mike Tyson, has his own Apprentice like TV show; this argument would only work for a country like Saudi Arabia, he is obviously not a uber pious religion lover, he is a hand, not a brain.

Russia and Turkey are uniquely similar to each other in the way they are both militaristic eurasian nations where nationalistic emotions are more important than laws.

Area had lots of insurgencies in the past but current leader Kadyrov is very loyal to Putin, so as long as area stays loyal to Moscow, there is no legal or illegal.

Militaristic countries do not quite work like diplomatic nations of western europe.

This, he's Putin's puppet

and a dictator.

also what many seem to skip

Homosexuality was first illegalized in Chechnya when Russia conquered it in the late 1800s. After the Red Revolution, all of Russia legalized homosexuality again, but it was re-illegalized under Joseph Stalinfor the whole Soviet Union.

In 1991, when Dzhokhar Dudayev declared Chechnya to be independent, Russian law was discarded, and a secular government was established, making homosexuality de facto legal. This law was kept under Aslan Maskhadov.

Why does anyone think Putin would care? He probably approves.

Yeah I read about the place...everything seemed so messy about it. I might have a flight layover in Russia this summer and I'm kinda nervous now.

That is why I wrote "political scapegoating + Islamic extremism" in my original post. I'm not under the impression this is entirely religiously motivated.

However, if you support honor killings and the murder of anyone who insults the prophet Muhammad, as Kadyrov does, it's certainly fair to say you are a Islamic fundamentalist.
