Having international hits will become increasingly more important

So ppl were talking about how artists don't make any money off of streaming and as streaming takes over, artists won't make virtually any money off of their music. The only way they will make big money is by touring and to have big tours you will need to consistently have WW hits. Will this prove to be a challenge for artists like Gaga who have become sort of local? (not saying Gaga specifically since she has built enough of a legacy internationally to tour on her name alone even without WW hits just using her as an example of artists who are local to north america and a few niche countries.) and what do you think this means for the music industry in general? Will albums matter less and less and the focus will only be on singles from now on unfortunately?

That doesn't mean anything, Rihanna has tons of WW hits and she couldn't even fill a stadium tour whereas Beyoncé who had less WW hits achieved to sold out many shows for her stadium tour.

At the end of the day, people will pay to see a great performer depending on their names or not.

It's always better to be global if you want to be seen as an icon or legend. And those usually make the most on tours, so yes

I feel like Gaga should balance her music :duck: Gaga has one of the most unique and original "mainstream" pop music but she's not the it girl anymore, this new generation doesn't look up to Gaga the way we did 8 years ago, her music isn't something the GP would eat without any problems, I LOVE ARTPOP and Joanne but Gaga seems so out of touch with the industry and it kinda worries me, I lover her originality and artistry but I don't want to see her albums selling less and less. I think she should collab with artists more often, more mainstream ones, it won't hurt her music or something, she just needs a bit of exposure for the newer generations, balance her artistry and what's mainstream. DON'T COME AT ME

Small tours are still extremely profitable for smaller artists. You can make thousands of dollars per show doing theatres. However it will be much harder to launch arena tours for sure.

I agree with you. To become a legend/icon I think it is important to have both, artistic integrity and a certain amount of commercial success. I think the most difficult part is to find the balance of both factors!

Beyonce is already in a league of her own. She is sort of already a legend and legends like her sell out stadiums on their name alone because of years of impact and hits (she's at over 2 decades into her career now). Name another artist who grosses massively without WW hits now a days that is not a legend or on their way to legendhood? It's very very rare.

I think this will only get more difficult. If you have local hits you may gross well locally but internationally you won't do too well and so you won't be making as much money. Hits are vital to having big tours and tours are becoming increasingly more important for artists as it's sort of their only form of income since music does not pay enough anymore. (not saying they will be broke lol even without international hits and smaller tours they still make more money then all of us combined but I'm just comparing their current income to what they used to get. I'm sure it's drastically smaller.)

I don't know how hit dependent she will be to sell out tours. Beyonce haven't had a huge hit ww since  telephone, and then her sasha album but she is still having huge tours and is viewed as one of the biggest in pop ,if not the greatest pop artist of our time.

Gaga need's to stay relevant somehow WW but that doesn't mean she need to have hits.

I'm wondering if this article is true about "salary" from streaming.

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/apr/03/how-much-musicians-make-spotify-itunes-youtube

If it is true, so that means artists earn 110 000$ from 100m streams on Spotify and 30 000$ from 100m on Youtube? I think it's too much or am I wrong?
And this article is 2yo so a lot could change.

And yeah, they earn the most money on touring, not on selling singles or albums. That is just for promo.

Music sales never mattered, artists have been making their money by touring and selling overpriced merchandise to fans for at least 30-40 years now.

Beyonce has more than 10 years under her belt before she stopped catering to radio. Gaga also hasn't reached Bey's level in terms of being critics' darling yet. This is kind of a shaky comparison as much as like Gaga better than Bey.
