What, because Syria is currently a hot topic in Western Media? It is different because the armed forces of the US attacked the armed forces of a sovereign nation, and it wasn't due to our forces being threatened. There is a legality issue, both with the US government and with the UN. An attack on terrorists, like ISIS, doesn't need the approval of congress...but an attack on a sovereign nation is different. Gaga Monster 13,001
Every country but Russia and Iran have supported the attack. The democrats supported the attack. It was very successful. It showed North Korea look, if you do something bad, we have these weapons we aren't scared to use. It showed Assad, unlike the previous administration, we will do something. Those countries aren't attacking another sovereign country's arm forces without the pre-approval of the UN, a coalition or their government. The civil war in Syria is FAR more complicated than your simplistic statements you keep regurgitating. First of all, now the US is fighting on both sides of a civil war. Now, we are actually helping ISIS. Russia or Iran could easily use this attack to retaliate on our forces there or on one of our allies there. Then, US forces will have to retaliate...and then we are involved in a war with Syria, Iran and Russia IN Syria. What do you think happens to citizens across the country then? Assad doesn't care about this. He knows that he has Iran and Russia on his side and he doesn't care for his citizens. If we take out Assad, what happens then? ISIS takes over? If we weaken Assad, ISIS will get stronger. It's a highly complex situation, one that involves innocent citizens, US military, our allies in the area, and quiet possibly surrounding countries that would feel the impact of a strengthening of ISIS. This also didn't show North Korea anything, Do you think that psycho dictator is going to curtail his nuclear program because of some attack in the Middle East? We don't want to get in a war with North Korea either! That's all we need, to be involved in two Vietnam type civil wars at once. No one wins in these situations. That's what a Republican Congress forced Obama to do. Maybe if they allowed some military intervention before Russia and Iran got so involved and before the country has fallen into civil war between multiple groups, we might not be in this mess, to this extent. BTW, we are doing something. Fighting ISIS. Now, we will be fighting to strengthen ISIS. Will you condemn the Republicans when this happens? And that's all you have to say? Are you interested in a discussion or are you going to keep repeating the same five of six sentences in various combinations? This technique reminds me of someone...a certain Orange someone. We aren't fighting to strengthen ISIS, we blew up a air base that had chemical weapons. We sent a clear message to Syria and almost every politician (Democrat, Republican) agreed with it as well as our military and generals. Hillary said she would do the same If we weaken Assad, we strengthen ISIS. That's why we don't want to get in some kind of civil war with Syria. We did not "blow up the air base". We hit a few airplanes. Six Syrian air force planes undergoing repairs at the base were destroyed. The runways aren't damaged to any significant amount. The actual damage caused by the airstrikes seems to be relatively limited – it appears to be a warning over the use of chemical weapons rather than an attempt to scale back or disable Syrian air capacity. The Syrian government controls over a dozen airbases, and has a large fleet of planes and helicopters, even after years of war. It also has the backing of the Russian military and its air force. The Russians are now bringing in more defense systems. The "clear message" was to kick some sand on the feet of Assad. With Russia and Iran backing him, he will just dust his feet off. Probably send a few more barrel bombs into civilian areas, just for the hell of it. This is far more complicated than a simplistic "we were successful". I guess Trump didn't read that chapter of "President for dummies". And the whole american politic spectrum agreeing with that just show how stupid your officials are. I hope an investigation will be made and the US punished by the UN.

Based on what I'm reading, here's how I see this playing out. If a smarter bear would like to weight in, I'm definitely interested: - Putin has aided Assad for years, both creating a refugee crisis in Syria and stoking fears of refugees throughout Europe and the US. - Trump needs a "win" to distract from Russian investigations. - Trump impulsively launches Tomahawk missiles, while being sure to warn Russia (who clearly warned Assad). - Russia will huff and puff about US escalation of war, allowing Trump and Putin to pretend that they haven't been colluding for well over a year. - Wouldn't you know it, Secretary of State Exxon is already scheduled to visit Russia in 2 weeks. - They'll come up with a "tremendous deal" (which Trump will demand full credit for) that will see Russia condemn Assad's use of chemical weapons, in exchange for lifting US Sanctions on Russian oil. - Putin will throw Assad under the bus, since he's only ever been a useful puppet for him, and Putin now has a MUCH BIGGER useful puppet in the White House. - Exxon and Rosneft (effectively owned by Putin) finally go ahead with their $720 million dollar deal, which Trump has allegedly been offered a 19% stake in. - Trump will be hailed as a genius dealmaker who singlehandedly stopped the Syrian crisis, and coast his way to a second term. Any mention of Russian collusion will be dropped from both the mainstream and right wing news. It's a bit too "conspiracy theory" for me but not entirely unbelievable. Don't let 'em pull the wool over your eyes, never forget that Trump only does for himself, his, and his own. Always has, always will.
