But I do remember that it was an accident. No?

I was more commenting on the "shock-factor" of both styles. To me, saying Gaga's look was classier because she had her nipples "covered" is a bit of a stretch.... I mean, COME ON, it hides nothing :toofunny: I'll never understand what makes nipples so controversial.

driver roll up the partition pls :reductive:

In the bedroom? Hot as hell. Outside the bedroom? Tacky as hell. I wish more women could make this distinction. There's a fine line between s-xy and trashy and this is crossing it. What kind of society have we become where this flounting of public deceny laws is allowed just because you're a celebrity? To be honest, I'd find her look way s-xier if the dress wasn't transparent. It's instances like this that make me declare Rihanna's status as a s-x bomb to be debatable - she merely acts out s-xual themes but isn't actually s-xy while doing it. Her ways may impress young boys and dirty old men but most men will consider this outrageous, in-your-face s-xuality to be a real turn-off. And most women are also not impressed with the kind of women who look like they could steal their man (which is why I don't understand why Rihanna has so many female fans). I can't stand it when women who have great bodies think that gives them a licence to show it off wherever they go and really push the envelope on what is too much. And any women who critiques them gets called jealous. Ever thought they maybe don't show off their bodies because they're comfortable enough with themselves to not flaunt it about and have a modicum of class and dignity?

It'd not say exactly controversial, fully nude is not aesthetically nice in public. There are some parts or the body that its better to stay hidden for others to imagine, they are not nice to get exposed. Its not something that has to do with backwards thinking, its about knowing were to stop. Hyperbole is not a good thing, we can say that Rihanna crossed the thin line between controversial and bad-ridiculous.

Everyone familiar with these things. If you read the laws of your country it says that public nudity is not allowed because its offensive to others around you. The human body is nothing to be ashamed about but you can't expose everything in public.

I was being sarcastic. I very well know that the way we perceive nudity is the result of centuries of civilisation. However, it doesn't mean that these boundaries can't move ;) We're in 2014, I think it's time to overcome our fear of titties tbh.

Also, notice that this is only the female breast that is controversial - centuries of civilisation, but also centuries of misogyny. It's not because it's a habit that it's right. Think about it.

It's definitely a daring look :omg: I love it from the neck up, as in the hair and headwear and makeup are beautiful  The dress is beautiful too, but I'm on the fence about it (probably my prudish side coming out)

Regardless, I respect the guts to bare your body like that  and I do like how she looks like she just stepped out of a pool of Swarovski crystals, like she's dripping in them :flutter:

Excuse me, I'm not a tumblr feminist - I actually study feminism properly and understand what it means. You can't just use that phrase to insult someone who says something you don't agree with. Also, as a man, it's harder for you to understand where a woman's coming from on this particular issue. Just imagine for a moment what it must feel like to be a woman and have to deal with being expected to look perfect all the time in order to be considered worthwhile. It doesn't matter if she doesn't want to be a role model, the fact is Rihanna is a role model to a lot of young girls and if she presents herself like this, it sends a terrible message.

I agree. This dress is not s-xy, it's tacky and vulgar. Seeing her standing next to Anna Wintour was really awkward !

I must be honest though, I don't like Rihanna because I think she relies too much on her body to sell, and not enough on actual songs. The fact that she's about to release her eigth album is surprising. Like she releases an album every year !

ANYWAY. I'm not jealous of Rihanna's body. I actually don't care at all. What I don't like is her being called a fashion icon or whatever when she shows up to a fashion event dressed like this. She's basically naked under her dress, how is that classy ? And I'm not defending Gaga. I know she does it too and I'm not always okay with it, but I love her so that's another story.

Exactly - if Rihanna did not look the way she did, she would not have the success she does. A woman who dresses like this sends the message: "I have nothing to offer but my body." It's hard to be entranced by someone's intelligence or wit when they're practically naked, after all. Covering your body makes you more elusive and mysterious and keeps people interested for longer. That would be a far more controversial, shocking route for her to take, actually. But no, the only way that she knows how to shock is s-xually, the same as Madonna (although she's been branching out into violent shock recently). Gaga most definitely has her moments too. That transparent outfit with the nipple covers and teal wig is definitely one of my least favourite looks of hers - it doesn't matter that she's my fave, what she wore was tacky and disgusting. But, thankfully, Gaga can at least shock in more ways than one, like eating bovine hearts, wearing scary masks, wearing prothestic horns on her face and being vomited on. Other popstars don't know how to be shocking other than s-xually and it's so tiresome to watch because everyone does the same thing, thinking they're being so edgy, oblivious to the fact that it's already been done before. This is one reason why I didn't find Miley's reinvention all that shocking - I became a fan of Christina Aguilera in her Stripped era, so this whole "good girl gone bad" thing was nothing new. Similarly, I'm not all that shocked by Rihanna's get-up because I've seen looks like this done before and even more extreme - Melody from The ***cat Dolls wore a transparent dress 2 years ago or so and Madonna went full on topless to an event once.

Yes ! I'm tired of that. I don't want to see boobs, I want to listen to music, I want to like an artist for something else than her/his showing his body to sell. To me, it just proves that there's nothing underneath that, and it's sad tbh. If the only thing an singer can do to sell is to do that, then there's something wrong. Not only with her/him, but with society as a whole because society seems to like that...

Then you're not in touch with women very well. Men and women experience the world very differently, but surely you must realise that the pressure to look good is primarily a women's issue. Men can throw on the same outfit everyday and no one will say a thing, but a woman will be laughed at for not wearing new clothes all the time. A man doesn't have to worry how his hair looks or even if he goes bald, but a woman's hair is a huge part of her identity and requires so much maintenance and to start losing our hair is our worst nightmare. A man can be hairy all over and plenty of women will find that attractive, but a woman who doesn't wax her entire body to within an inch of its life is considered nasty. A man can be overweight and put on some pounds later in life without many people saying a word about it, but a woman who is a bit chubby will endure bullying and be looked down on for letting herself go and even if she's had kids, she'll be expected to snap back into her old body quickly. A man can be older and still be employable and get a young, attractive woman on his arm, while a woman is considered fit for the scrap heap as soon as she hits 40 in employment (particularly if she works in the media industry) and she'll be lucky to find a man young and attractive by that point. So, tell me again, with a straight face, that men and women suffer the same pressures to look perfect.
