No, Isabelle was.

I haven't seen all the movies nominated (including La La Land oops) but I really hoped for Isabelle to win. Such a great performance and a really gripping film. It was obvious Emma would win but wow Elle was like nothing I've seen before, and a really great performance in a really great role.

Tbh though I'm surprised that the Oscars nominated a film like that in a major category at all.

Any moderately talented young actress could of pulled off Emma's role in La La Land. She was literally playing herself besides the basic white girl dancing and singing. I'm really surprised at the The Academys hard on for Emmas performance. She was not very likable as a character at all.  Ryan Gosling was really the one with all the Old Hollywood charm that the movie was going for. Emma kind of felt out of place to me.

Natalie Portman is just on a whole other level though. Very few actresses could have pulled off that role. And not to mention, it was such an important role for a woman to be recognized in. Like we dont get these big biopics/complex character studies centered on women nearly enough.

The clip they used to show Emma work on La La Land was shameful, that acting was tragique...the Oscar was snubbed for Natali or Meryl...the Meryl clip was perfection, that ending.

Yes! The Academy always fawns over cutsie-girly type of roles and they prefer that instead of celebrating stories about womanhood and women of a certain age. Emma's young, fresh and her win was not quite on merit ( in my opinion) and  because she fit a familiar, safe mold she went home with the statue.
