It was obvious Emma would win but wow Elle was like nothing I've seen before, and a really great performance in a really great role. She was literally playing herself besides the basic white girl dancing and singing. I'm really surprised at the The Academys hard on for Emmas performance. She was not very likable as a character at all. Ryan Gosling was really the one with all the Old Hollywood charm that the movie was going for. Emma kind of felt out of place to me. Natalie Portman is just on a whole other level though. Very few actresses could have pulled off that role. And not to mention, it was such an important role for a woman to be recognized in. The Academy always fawns over cutsie-girly type of roles and they prefer that instead of celebrating stories about womanhood and women of a certain age. Emma's young, fresh and her win was not quite on merit ( in my opinion) and because she fit a familiar,safe mold she went home with the statue.
