This semester I'm taking Celebrities and Media Culture and last week's lesson was about celebrities and how they connect with people/fans. And this theory was dropped on me: Three degrees of celebrity worship Entertainment-social dimension: Benign relationship Intense –personal dimension: Compulsive nature towards celebrities; obsessive Borderline pathological: fantasies and un-manageable behaviours It was also interspersed with pictures of little girls and grown men crying and holding signs and **** (at that point I started laughing because it was too real) I would say most of us don't have a "benign relationship" with Gaga here lol. I mean, me for example, I basically blew all my money last week on concert tickers, slept on the street for her shows, waited for hours and hours at her hotel, followed her across London, think about her pretty often, think about what I'm going to say to her, am in the process of downloading pictures and shoots and videos for my Gaga folder, cut school for her etc etc. So idk if I'm in denial, but I wouldn't say I'm borderline pathological but at the same time my connection with her feels a bit more than "compulsive" and "obsessive" Are we all going to end up in the mad house? I would say that I am a Gaga stan, but I would never sleep out on the streets just to see her. Or wait for hours to see her leave a hotel. I wouldnt even spend hundreds of £s (or $ if american) to see her live in concert. I have a life too, and Gaga will always come 2nd to that. Gaga is the only artist which I'm fully interested in - but I would never risk my health just to see her and stuff End Racism Now

Fiona Apple 13,006
Stanning is undeniably unhealthy. Caring about music&artists as a hobby isn't.
SarahYuko 1,002
It's just Gaga for me. But yeah I agree that most of us in GGD don't have a benign relationship. We lean more towards obsessive. I think maybe one or two are borderline pathological from what I've seen. Anyway I don't think it's necessarily unhealthy if you're still high-functioning and mentally stable. And if it doesn't interfere with your life and your reality. And if it does, I personally would say it's a result of some other mental issue that the stan has that they are projecting in their standom. I'm no expert lol but that's what I think might be. River 116,775
I think it's just some people takes it too seriously.. like they are offended for their favorite artists, overprotecting, writing an essay about stupid subjects.. sometimes it feels like they don't have a life and I'm like "please shut down your computer, go outside and ****ing live".. I think it's becoming psychopathic.. just look at twitter, ATRL, GGD etc. I find it fun to troll stans, it's so easy to trigger their stanning card and make them go crazy So sploosh your juice all over me you Riverboy
Beautiful Dirt 162
I think it is But don't we all have some kind of obsessions and addictions? For me, this one seems healthier than many others, so I'm happy. Saying that, I believe my 'stanning' isn't that unhealthy, just a pass time when I'm bored
DeanWinchester 41,390
Speaking personally, yes. Gaga's slayage the past week had prevented me from doing my standard workouts and I was checking my phone even at work. Ot's ridiculous. I was so glued to the charts thread even up to now. Flyin' like a 1000 Doves
FRANZGA 13,920
imho.. it is UNHEALTHY.. but not really to the point that you'll end up in a mental hospital.. more like when you're obsessed with your crush.. Like, I lost hours and hours of sleep just for updates or to watch her perf.. normal fans wouldn't wait and yeah that is UNHEALTHY.. i also imagine things like how her era should be done, ideal singles and chart performance.. but then again it's because of music and entertainment.. life is so dull without it
FlopSlurper 34,336
It's benefited me more than harmed me. I've made a lot of amazing friends (some that I've known for years) and opened my eyes to matters I wouldn't have cared about/known of if I wasn't a stan . On the contrary, I can't think of any con apart from the fact that it can be very time consuming.
Princess Stache 2,066
Everyone is obsessed with something, but you don't see straight people being called "pathological" for being obsessed with football, sitting on their couch for hours a night, screaming at the TV, blowing their money on tickets, playing fantasy, gambling, and worshiping the players. Elizabeth 450
I think it's unhealthy if you're the type of fan who spends all of their free time on social media constantly seeing what people are saying and tweeting about Gaga and obsessing over minor movements in chart positiosn etc. because I think then it doesn't even become about being a fan anymore, it's almost like a competition between stans to see who's fave has the best stats, even when some of said stats are absolutely irrelevant to enjoying and supporting an artist. I also think it's unhealthy when people are personally offended by Gaga's decisions, like for instance when she gets a new tattoo and fans start going crazy and appear to be genuinely hurt by what she's done. I do think when you spend a lot of time on the internet it is easy to fall into these unhealthy habits though, and I know I've been close to it in the past but likely I've always been able to pull myself back to see the whole picture, especially as I've gotten older and more mature. Katie14 4,828
I made a thread about this same topic a few weeks ago. I feel like I am in between intense and borderline pathological. I spend far too much time checking GGD. Anytime I get a spare moment I check this site to see if anything new happened. Its the same reason why slot machines are addictive. You keep pulling the lever because the reward occurs at variable intervals so you dont know when you will be rewarded. Its always a surprise. Its called either ratio or interval reinforcement in Psychology. Sometimes I also read the Gaga related threads on Redditt after she has a major performance. I think about Gaga alot during the day, probably because its a distraction from worrying about my own life. Im not interested very much in who she is dating but I am very interested in how she is doing, like her mental health. Ive never stalked her or waited outside her apartment. I dont feel deeply upset when she isn't doing well on the charts but I do get irked when people don't respect her. I do feel a sense of satisfaction when things are going well for her (performances have positive reception, positive metacritic scores, ect). So, I don't really know what category I fit in but I do think that a lot, if not most of the fans who are active on here feel the same way that I do. Im especially obsessive lately because she has been doing so much.

Ok. #judgingyou No judging please SpreadKindness But on all seriousness, some people express their gratitude in much more intense ways than others, and others will pick up on that. Rude none the less to drag her I cant imagine how scary it would be to be someone like Gaga and have some people psychotically obsessed with her, talk about god damn scary. Anyway, my stanship is identified by me only interested in her musical abilities, music and performances. Fcuk the charts, the personal life. I'm here for the talent and the message she portrays to the world. She's influenced me to be a nicer person through her music and message, because I used to be a deeply dark, rude, unapologetic a$shole!
