It works like this as far as I know I may be wrong: So basically every year the SB considers a handful of artists and puts them through a vetting process. I'm sure Gaga has been considered before. I think BB revealed that this year Rihanna, Gaga, Adele, and Maroon 5 were all considered but Gaga got it. I don't think they offered it to Adele first, she was probably just notified that she was being vetted and then didn't want to even be considered.
