StrawberryBlond 14,866
I still can't quite believe this. Even the haters didn't predict a drop this big. Will the Grammy performance really help it all that much though? Katy isn't known for being an amazing live singer and that's putting it mildly. Unless she does something wild or has the best vocals of her career, I don't see it improving much (and if something goes wrong, she'll be talked about for all the wrong reasons). Gaga performed Applause at the MTV awards and it didn't help the song any. People just weren't that into it, it's that simple. If the public aren't feeling a song, no amount of promo will make them buy it. It used to, but not anymore. Radio played her flop singles from Prism and that didn't help them to become hits either. So, Grammys and radio deal don't mean all that much. Honestly, if she'd eased off on the political message in the song, she could have had a hit. But she made the song's intention too on the nose. She's basically telling people: "Dance mindlessly to a tune knowing that suffering is going on while you do it." Unsurprisingly, people don't like to be guilt tripped by a singer, especially a popstar. A song encouraging people to dance is fine but a song encouraging people to dance with a sarcastic intention and a guilt trip isn't going to come over well, especially by pop fans. Gaga tried this kind of thing before. It doesn't work. Not to mention, people are sick of hearing about politics and along comes a popstar telling them to stop enjoying life and be political. Unsurprisingly, people don't want to be preached to by Katy Perry, who's famous for making mindless pop songs.
