Why did the roof have to be opened if the part on the roof was prerecorded?

Gaga started her performance dangling halfway above the stadium. The drone show and singing on the roof was filmed earlier in the week. 

So, why was the roof opened? Just to make everyone in the stadium believe she was jumping? Its pretty obvious from fan videos that she started from the middle though...

For pyrotechnics and stuff, but also to help with the illusion for the audience at home. The entire show opens with a shot of the open roof and then there is a shot of her on the roof singing.

There was discussion about how the roof was opening up for Gaga before the halftime show too.


If the roof was closed it would have ruined the logic of the performance. No, she didn't actually jump, but she wanted the T.V audience to believe she did - that's the real audience. To a certain degree I'm sure she wanted the stadium to feel like it made sense too - even if it was obvious to them it was staged - it's not as much of a stretch of the imagination then it would be if they all saw on the big screens her performing on the roof while knowing the roof is closed.
