PeterPan 0
32 minutes ago, StrawberryBlond said: Whether she has a semi hit or flops, it'll be her least successful era, for sure. She didn't outpeak TD and by the time the new album's released, it'll be 3.5 years or more that she's been gone, a bit too much of a break to take after an album that only had 2 hits (both of which were also 3.5 years ago). Part of the reason why Katy has had success is because she's always kept her momentum going. She'd been on the radio nonstop from 2008-2013. But after failing to score a hit throughout the whole of 2014, not releasing anything in 2015 and only releasing a flop stand-alone single in 2016, she's going to have to work hard for another hit in 2017. She's going to have to release seriously good material that the public and the critics like, her vocals have got to be good and she's got to perform it everywhere. That's the only way I can see her getting a hit from here on out. She's losing her cool factor, the youth market has moved on a lot in her absence. The public have given up on supporting her generic pop stuff, seeing how 3 out of 5 singles from Prism flopped. She's in her 30's now, she's got to show maturity and growth or she won't survive. But seeing as the public don't support her mature singles, it's unlikely that going this route will lead to commercial success either. She's in a catch 22 situation and it's going to be very interesting to see how it all plays out. The music industry is in a new place now. People aren't interested in buying albums unless there's seriously good music on it, they are no longer willing to buy super generic albums. They'll buy the occasional single for 99c, but not the album. And they definitely won't see the artist on tour if their vocals aren't good. Katy hit her peak with touring with Prism, there's no way she'll replicate the outstanding success she had in Australia next time, she won't be able to do a big Asian leg or a Latin American leg, she'll be stuck with North America and Europe to bring in the big bucks. So, with reduced album sales and reduced touring sales, she's already up against it. The only artists who had major selling power in 2016 were Beyonce, Drake and Adele. Everyone else has been struggling, even the ones with good voices and good albums. Most of the people who had hit singles last year didn't extend to a hit album (or at least, not a 'hit album' like we used to define it. So, Katy's really going to have to outdo herself if she wants to stand a chance of still being in the major pop leagues. In a time when selling 500k in the US is considered amazing, I don't know if Katy can be the one to break through. I think the same way. That's assuming that if she flops it's because she went generic. What if she flops because she does mature music? Then she really won't have anywhere left to go. Like I said, catch 22. Yes, she did say it at some point during her TD re-release era. She said "My music is about to get really f*****g dark. You'd never see my face because my hair would be in it." She said it to The Sun newspaper. But when Prism came out, she said she'd decided to "let the light in," which seemed code for "my label didn't want me to release something so depressing and risky." How do you even outpeak TD, I mean she had six #1 singles. Thats almost impossible to top lol

Ariana's only ever had a fraction of the commercial success that Katy has had. While this era is considered successful for Ariana, if Katy were to have that same success it would probably be considered a disappointment by her standards. They're just on totally differing levels of success. But this also ties into what I meant by female pop acts not being as much of a force as they have been in the past. If Ariana released Dangerous Woman in 2009, when the musical landscape was absolutely dominated by artists like Katy, Gaga, Britney, Rihanna and Kesha, it may have had much greater success. Similarly, the music that Katy releases this year might see a dip in commercial success because musical trends have shifted so much.

I mean, yeah, Katy's been out of the spotlight for a while and Prism's singles didn't exactly do great aside from Dark Horse and Roar, but the biggest difference between her and Gaga is that Gaga has a history of being bold and putting the public off side, while Katy's been safe for the sake of keeping that public support. So while she's been absent for a while, her return will probably be marginally more welcomed than Gaga's. EDIT: That said, Katy's coming back to a changed musical landscape. Female pop acts all around aren't as strong a force as they have been the past decade or so. Having a big name isn't necessarily enough anymore for anybody. I agree female pop music isn't what it use to be anymore, well music in general now , little off topic but it caused me too step away from the mainstream and actually made me explore different genres. Don't go for second best, baby Put your love to the test
Anderson123 38,687
Hmm no but I have the feeling this is going to be her best album yet. I mean, she's working with Max Martin and Sia, I bet she's working with Greg Kurstin as well and some other pop producers. If Dr. Luke is not part of this project, this will have a different sound/vibe than all of her past albums and that actually would be better. Dr. Luke has really made Katy's music generic as hell and I can't stand it. It seems like she's going for a disco/funk vibe now so lets see.

I think it's a good thing that you're exploring other genres! My job has encouraged me to explore other genres, and honestly, there's some really great Alternative and rock music out there. Super catchy and infectious, I'm honestly surprised some of it isn't blowing up on pop radio. But yeah, pop radio is in a really weird place right now. I don't even recognise half the acts that are on the charts at the moment. There's new names every week and none of them seem to last long.

Plus Bey's 4 didn't flop thanks to Run The World, Countdown and Love on Top, not to mention the baby bump , Lady Gaga's ARTPOP didn't flop for 2.M sales, Mother Monster flopped durin C2C since it has no discostick. Luxe Ford 3,481
The horiffic notion that someone's 'ARTPOP era' would mean a flop. That's an alternative fact, you miserable heretics! What happens in Luxe Ford stays in Luxe Ford

Thomas P 18,479
I mean ya it's possible, but Katy is close to being a legacy act like gaga and Beyoncé while still being EXTREMELY commercially viable like Rihanna. But yes fourth albums have always had a bad tracking record: ARTPOP - Lady Gaga 4 - Beyoncé Rated R - Rihanna (one of her least succesful) And like a lot more, but fifth albums always revamp: Joanne - Lady Gaga (Super Bowl has made it one of the lost succesful so far this year) BEYONCÉ - Beyoncé (this album CEMENTED her in the history of music) Loud - Rihanna (3 number 1s, sold really well, etc.) I’m a simple guy to please, if you like Melodrama, we chill.
