Remember when Prism was originally supposed to be "dark"

Did she really say that? Or was that just fan speculation like the content of my post?

I think she will do fine, she's big with the general public and they like her music.

But I do hope that it is completely different and unexpected because I'll stan her again if she shows growth and something really cool and fresh compared to her last lead, Roar.

Whether she has a semi hit or flops, it'll be her least successful era, for sure. She didn't outpeak TD and by the time the new album's released, it'll be 3.5 years or more that she's been gone, a bit too much of a break to take after an album that only had 2 hits (both of which were also 3.5 years ago). Part of the reason why Katy has had success is because she's always kept her momentum going. She'd been on the radio nonstop from 2008-2013. But after failing to score a hit throughout the whole of 2014, not releasing anything in 2015 and only releasing a flop stand-alone single in 2016, she's going to have to work hard for another hit in 2017. She's going to have to release seriously good material that the public and the critics like, her vocals have got to be good and she's got to perform it everywhere. That's the only way I can see her getting a hit from here on out. She's losing her cool factor, the youth market has moved on a lot in her absence. The public have given up on supporting her generic pop stuff, seeing how 3 out of 5 singles from Prism flopped. She's in her 30's now, she's got to show maturity and growth or she won't survive. But seeing as the public don't support her mature singles, it's unlikely that going this route will lead to commercial success either. She's in a catch 22 situation and it's going to be very interesting to see how it all plays out.

The music industry is in a new place now. People aren't interested in buying albums unless there's seriously good music on it, they are no longer willing to buy super generic albums. They'll buy the occasional single for 99c, but not the album. And they definitely won't see the artist on tour if their vocals aren't good. Katy hit her peak with touring with Prism, there's no way she'll replicate the outstanding success she had in Australia next time, she won't be able to do a big Asian leg or a Latin American leg, she'll be stuck with North America and Europe to bring in the big bucks. So, with reduced album sales and reduced touring sales, she's already up against it. The only artists who had major selling power in 2016 were Beyonce, Drake and Adele. Everyone else has been struggling, even the ones with good voices and good albums. Most of the people who had hit singles last year didn't extend to a hit album (or at least, not a 'hit album' like we used to define it. So, Katy's really going to have to outdo herself if she wants to stand a chance of still being in the major pop leagues. In a time when selling 500k in the US is considered amazing, I don't know if Katy can be the one to break through.

I would be so here for her to flop, don't take it in wrong way, I mean only if she flops she will grow as an artist and quit the generic bubblegum trash

I think the same way. That's assuming that if she flops it's because she went generic. What if she flops because she does mature music? Then she really won't have anywhere left to go. Like I said, catch 22.

Yes, she did say it at some point during her TD re-release era. She said "My music is about to get really f*****g dark. You'd never see my face because my hair would be in it." She said it to The Sun newspaper. But when Prism came out, she said she'd decided to "let the light in," which seemed code for "my label didn't want me to release something so depressing and risky."

Maybe, we'll see if in 3 years from now she disowns the album all together :trollga:

I doubt it tbh.

I mean, yeah, Katy's been out of the spotlight for a while and Prism's singles didn't exactly do great aside from Dark Horse and Roar, but the biggest difference between her and Gaga is that Gaga has a history of being bold and putting the public off side, while Katy's been safe for the sake of keeping that public support.

So while she's been absent for a while, her return will probably be marginally more welcomed than Gaga's.

EDIT: That said, Katy's coming back to a changed musical landscape. Female pop acts all around aren't as strong a force as they have been the past decade or so. Having a big name isn't necessarily enough anymore for anybody.

Ah that sucks. The demos, if there were any (I'm guessing yes, since the label stopped her from doing it?) probably sounded better than Prism. And it would have been way more impactful coming after the TD era.

Prism was a huge flop in my opinion. two successful singles the other like 18 singles flopped hard.

Dark Horse and Roar just like Work and Needed Me. Equal success honey.

Most people don't have 2 #1s on an album, look at Dangerous Woman, it doesnt have any #1's yet this album is considered a success because she has done well this era plus a Grammy nom
