CT is a bop and y'all will deal. Some songs share that specific tropical sound but are very different in many ways. Its not like they are all the same.

And for the record, Work from Home is one of the best song of 2016. Its refreshing, well produced, catchy, playful and extremely efficient. Of course its not deep, its pop music guys.

This thread doesnt make necessary nuances.

Gurl this is pop music. It rarely ever has any substance. It's almost always generic and following trends :laughga:

Gaga has been one of the only few artists to regularly put out meaningful music. And Cheap Thrills does have a deeper meaning behind it.

Trends come and go in pop music. Enjoy these frivolous bops while they're around and something else will take it's place soon.

Also... are you a DIC hater...? :lolga:

1) Its not about meaning its more about the fact that this trend has just gone too far :emma:

2) NOOOO I love DIC :diane:

Cheap Thrills isn't the problem, its more the songs that came after it that desperately tried to gain some of the tropical house success, and sadly succeeded. (DWK, Shape of You)

I agree. but just labeling all the songs that have a tropical sound as generic, bad, and basic is an intellectual shortcut i refuse to make.

Honestly, I bop toa ll those songs. I think CT and WFM are the most well crafted.

Thats because they set the trends. I agree with the first statement, but the songs that came after (Dont Wanna Know - wtf?) are straight up sad attempts to gain radio plays because they use the same trend.

Y'all shouldn't mention Lemonade as one of the 'great' albums, because although it was good it got boring REALLY fast. Solange's album has more replay value.

Anti was a good album IMO. We missed LDR this year, but I'm waiting on her to bless this year with new music. Same with Marina. I find that knowing all these mainstream #1 songs are made for the sole purpose of making $$ and have zero substance such a turn off and I can never really listen to them. It might sound silly to some but I love listening to music and knowing the artist wrote/contributed to the production and is heavily involved with the process.

All those annoying Bieber songs, Drake, and those trap songs were such a turn off in 2016 because all were terrible. A mess. The pop and alternative queens (Gaga, Katy, Madonna, Lana, Marina, Brooke Candy) need to come back in 2017 and shift the music scene tide once again in their favor. Too many shallow artists are taking over it's making me sad.

I'm personally tired of the "pre-chorus is actually the entire chorus" trend.

Like, we get this huge build-up and it looks like it'll explode into this huge chorus, and then we get... the second verse.

I rage every time.

losing you made me an autocrat.

Ok, let's get one thing straight: something doesn't necessarily need "substance" to be good. Something doesn't have to be overwrought with emotive expressionism to be considered enjoyable or even well-done. "Substance" differs from consumer to consumer, so that, in and of itself, nullifies the argument that these songs are 'lacking' anything in particular - they just aren't cutting it for you as an individual. For example, for me specifically, Capsize's melodies and its instrumental evoke many feelings of longing and nostalgia. Also, although not a favorite of mine, I know many people who enjoy Be Alright for its messages and overall uplifting vibe. Are these emotions we're experiencing all of a sudden not valid, just because you and others aren't experiencing them? Because of a 'trend'? Music has and will forever follow trends, it's nothing new. So this one didn't do it for you, terrific. Just as we saw pop/dance, dubstep, trap/edm, now tropical house come and slowly go, prepare for the next trend to get tired of, or simply see that this is part of the overarching cycle.

I'm not ragging, but obviously needed to clarify: tropical house was an easy sound for streaming grabs and quick listen-ability, so yes, many acts gravitated towards it. Out of the many fads in music over the years, it was one of the most enjoyable for me, as I enjoy reggae and dancehall-infused pop very much so. Naturally, not all of it appeals to me, but 2015/2016 had more good than bad. These, for example:

And this extremely underrated gem:

I'm still so bitter that the US wasn't here for this song. It was honestly my favorite song of 2015-16. This should have been the definitive "song of the summer" in 2016, not "Cake By the Ocean". :crossed:
