It's really a ridiculous system. The reason it exists is to make sure all states are represented but if it were a popular vote system, everyone would still be represented. Just because you lose, doesn't mean you didn't have a voice.

The reason it's the same is because a new census is done every 10 years.

I mean, TIME called Trump the person of the year based on his "neutral" impacts. I applaud Guardian for having a category that is based on positive accomplishments, impact, and worthiness, even if it also means nothing at the end of the day  

(Though to be fair, I can honestly see the case for Bernie winning this over Hillary, even if I understand the subversive importance of selecting Hillary)

Yeah, I'd argue Bernie deserves it more, she's been MIA since the election while Bernie has been trying to comfort and rally anti-trump people.

I'm not a Hillary supporter by any means, but you and I can't imagine the personal toll this loss has taken on her. After dedicating decades of her life to achieving one goal, and failing spectacularly, she deserves time out of the public eye to lick her wounds. In spite of appearances, she is human.

Bernie, who I admire and voted for in the primaries, is out there "comforting anti-Trump people" because he is on a ****ing book tour - cashing in on his fifteen minutes.

Bernie is not only out there just because of a book tour, he'd be out there anyway. He just happens to have a book out, which is not a crime. Bernie also lost an election this year but he didn't leave the public eye. He's now trying to build his party back up and fighting for leadership that will get us back on track for the midterms. He's the one that plans to be the main opposition to the evil Trump agenda. He's the one writing new legislation to help the democrats out.

Its been 2 months since the election and we have no word from Clinton about how she plans to fight for progressive values in the post election world. We have no word from her in how she'll use her influence to fight Trump. And perhaps worst of all, she has not even tried to ease the fear of her supporters. But fine, 2 months isn't that long in the scheme of things. But if she doesn't come out fairly soon, it's gonna be questionable.

Bernie's performance in this election far exceeded what the public had expected of him, and what he expected of himself. The very opposite is true about Hillary. Bernie and Hillary are in totally different potions right now. Their losses are demonstrably different. Comparing their post election behavior is grossly unfair.

She has though  She's spoken a few times since her loss in fact  Idk what you want her to do, co-sponsor a bill? Make more Facebook posts?  

The Trump campaign basically put a target on her back for something she literally didn't do. Can you imagine if she tried to run for public office now? Tried to do X now? A good percentageof this country thought that she was a dangerous criminal who leaked government secrets and killed some rando people and some people thought these rumors of corruption with the Clinton Foundation and what not were enough to warrant voting in someone who is definitively a corrupt liar with a bad track record in the one thing that he claims to be good at  It'd be hard for her to take any significant roles within the party or maybe even behind the scenes. Name association is strong. You realize how many people Trump swayed over to his side by repeatedly saying "Obama" every time he referred to Clinton? Throwing Clinton's support behind a bill, act, movement, etc. might actively hurt said cause at the moment. I'm not saying she should never try to do anything again, but the damage has been done and I don't really think she will ever pursue public office again, which is a damn shame because she's been working for the American people's best interests for decades

People are a summation of their actions, words, and accomplishments and failures, etc. It's simple.

Oh okay, so since Hillary was expected to win and didn't, that's different then Bernie not being expected to win and not winning? Because I think he did expect to win especially once the primaries actually began. I know I was crushed when he lost. His entire base was and I'm sure he was as well, my ears could hear his pain when he had to admit in an interview that it didn't look like he would win. But he didn't stop campaigning on behalf of ballot initiatives and candidates. He kept going despite it being painful that he came so close but just short. And now Bernie, since he's an elected official, doesn't have the option to go off into the woods because he now gets so hang out in the GOP controlled government and gets the task of leading the resistance. 

But posr election behavior aside, I think Bernie contributed more to this year then Clinton did. Bernie brought the younger generation into politics and is ushering change in the Democratic Party. He proved you could run a national campaign without big donors. He got more individual contributions then any other campaign in history. Then after the election, he's still doing more in the fight for the soul of the party and campaigning for DNC officials that will push progressive ideas. 

Hillary may have won the primary but aside from that and getting to compete with Trump, what'd she do to deserve person of the year that Bernie didn't?
