Maybe, but we can't just deny that stoning is not only featured in the bible but that it was (and still is in some places) a popular means of punishment and execution. 

As Dr. Brian King (a scholar with a P.H.D from Cambridge in philosophy, who specialises in religious philosophy) explains in his analysis of the video:

"The final scene: here Gaga seems to be that woman who is caught in flagrante delicto. The law said that such a woman (and, indeed, the man) was to be stoned to death. When Jesus was brought such a woman, he said ‘Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.’ It seems that with Jesus betrayed, there’s no one to speak up for Gaga."

Stoning is a horrific practice, but I'm unsure of what you would find offensive about this particular depiction of stoning.

I'm also genuinely not trying to argue for the sake of it, I'm curious to hear what exactly the problem is and whether you think stoning should be depicted in art at all.

It just seems like it would be bizarre for Gaga, as Mary Magdalene, to be treated in any other fashion. It wouldn't make sense contextually. It's a biblical punishment that was prevalent in the time of Jesus.

Despite the stoning, I didn't get a very solemn feeling from the scene.

This stylization is surprising light-hearted considering the topic.

Judas was directed by LAG who ended up having major creative differences with the haus in the same time frame.

I disagree that it was treated light heartedly, you see the anger and hatred in the faces of those throwing the stones. Gaga is dressed in a oversized wedding dress representing her purity and innocence and after the stoning we see Gaga with a tear falling down her eye and the final shot is her lying dead on the ground.

It's certainly heavily stylized, but it doesn't feel, to me, like it was treated in a light hearted fashion. It was certainly dramatic, but not in a way that I felt took away from the seriousness of stoning.

It was a heavily stylized, modern depiction of biblical times - the punishment Gaga received was a  punishment popular in Jesus' time and a punishment that was heavily referenced in the bible. It makes sense for her character and also serves as a metaphor.

I know that Judas was directed by LAG and I'm aware they had major creative differences and problems afterwards  I'm not sure what that has to do with the topic though.


I can see your point of view, I just think... It's a reality for the time Gaga is representing and it's the punishment she would no doubt receive. I'm not sure that those who live in areas where stoning is a possibility are looking at the Judas music video and seeing it as Gaga treating stoning as something light hearted. In all honesty, I'm sure many of the people who live in such countries find Judas more offensive for a plethora of other reasons completely unrelated to the final scene.
