If anything this is a good spread showing people that hate doesn't need to be marching down your streets in a uniform-- It can be very normal people in your own neighborhood.

While it certainly mentions the dark truth, them allowing Neo-Nazis to potray themselves as innocent citizens and giving them a platform for their visual revamp conflicts with the aim of the piece that is attached to it.

I think given the base readers of the NYT, the nazis aren't going to recruit anyone with their touching pictures that wasn't already going to join the movement

There is no way out of finding yourself in violence with these types. Diplomacy will be ineffective in eradicating this disgusting species, especially now in Trump's America. In other words, peace will only be achieved through violence of all types, e.g. physical, intellectual, etc., whether we want to admit it or not. It is the last resort, but it is the only solution it seems like

Yeah, this was my exact reaction when I first saw the photos. I don't think it's the right approach though, the 'alt-right' movement is increasingly becoming normalised and the last thing we need is a nice photoshoot depicting them as nice, normal Americans.

The more alt-right, neo-nazi groups are presented as normal American families, the more they are humanised, the more they are presented as part of the norm - the easier it is for them to be presented as non-threatening. 

The more we present neo-nazi's as regular Americans who are family orientated and living relatable, normal lives - the more neo-nazi's are seen as regular Americans who are family orientated and living relatable, normal lives. There comes a point where people just accept that the alt-right is actually the norm, there comes a point where people just accept that this is normal - it's not. They are extreme and they should be treated as such.

This is exactly how these neo-nazis want to be portrayed and I think it's a huge oversight from the New York Times. Their beliefs and their actions have real life consequences and most importantly, they are simply wrong and the media should be focused on these things. We shouldn't be separating these people from their extreme ideologies, we shouldn't be separating them from the consequences of their ideologies and we shouldn't be normalising them. 

No matter what the intention, the execution was poor imo. As the article itself states:

"The National Socialist Movement, a leading neo-Nazi group, did away with its swastika. In its stead, the group chose a symbol from a pre-Roman alphabet that was also adopted by the Nazis.

According to Jeff Schoep, the movement’s leader, the decision to dispense with the swastika was “an attempt to become more integrated and more mainstream.”"

Their attempt to become "more integrated and more mainstream" is only aided by a photoshoot in a major newspaper depicting them as mainstream, normal American families.

I agree about the poor execution of the idea, hence the confusion (from OP and others) regarding the meaning of this article.
