USA: Tax Cuts Wont Help Economy Much

Democrats or more left wing parties wont works if the Government is competent and makes regulations that work, and spends tax money well

 

Socialism can be better than Capitalism at its best but its also easier to screw up if not done properly. Lots of resources can go to waste with failed socialism and you end up with failed states

 

So im a moderate... As far as which works better Socialism or Capitalism, I dont think the answer is as black and white as that. It also depends on how well the Government executes their strategy as well as a multitude of different factors

Keynesian policy isn't the same as socialist or conservative, it's common-sense policy. Socialdemocracy and right-wing 'stop being poor'-policy have little to do with government deficits. 

Countries like Canada, Germany and the UK have a very effective government with good policy-makers, so socialdemocracy would almost certainly be managed well in those countries. They're not new democracies with oligarchic tendencies with high corruption, high tax evasion, a government that cheats with numbers and in a currency union they don't fit in. That's why 'socialism' would work just as well in Canada as it has in Scandinavia.

It did work. We were considered the #1 best place in the world to live in most years up until the 1990s

 

But Canada also racked up a lot of debt during socialist years. The conservatives always use that to scare people into voting for the NDP

 

Im happy with the Liberals right now tho. They arent unduing everything the past Conservative Government did. They are just doing what makes sense and I like that

 

My Province could learn something from the Federal government cuz its been one screw up after the other I cant at how bad they are running things  

 

But back on point, yeah. I like politics like that. Left vs Right annoys me cuz they both have strengths an flaws and ppl are so dedicated to their political party they dont see it

And yeah it seems like Canada's also screwing up in many ways... I keep reading about how their provincial governments keep screwing up but I don't really know anything about Canadian politics so it's difficult to really have an opinion on it.

Just a question, but under conservative governments, did the total public debt as % of GDP actually decrease (so including municipalities, provinces and fed)? That's pretty important to take into consideration. It always looks like Canada is in a very stable situation but to be honest I have my doubts.

Good question... well Federal debt dropped from 71% of GDP at its peak in mid 90s to around 33% right now

 

But Provincial and Munincipal debt did increase a lot. I think Provinces tried to make up the services that the Federal Government cut

 

But even with Provincial debt included our debt is at $1.2 Trillion or about 60% of GDP so over-all its still better than it was at its worst point

 

As for Provincial screw ups, Ontario takes the cake. They made really terrible contracts and administration with our hydro and now we have the highest electricity rates in North America. For a Province that doesnt have many natural resources and relies on manufacturing, thats not a good problem to have. And they estimate electricity will go up another 40% over next 5 years. My boss says the electricity bills are really straining our company  

 

Also our Province has started many projects that it had to cancel halfway due to poor planning. The lastest example was a huge Natural Gas plant where we lost almost $1 Billion and it wont be completed and brought online. People were super pissed about that scandal

 

I seriously hope they loose next election cuz they tax to fund projects that they dont plan properly and then its a waste of resources
