Sis they teach the history of racism in public schools. You crack open a history book and look at political cartoons in the turn of the century and you'll see cartoons depicting black people as monkeys with slurs about them. It is a known fact in the United States that calling a black person a monkey is interpreted as a racial slur. It's not up for debate, this is a known fact.

Some of you seem to not be aware that: 

- Calling black people apes in the USA is historically racist. 

- Calling someone an ape over their looks in itself isn't the issue here, it's the racial slur part.

- Black people in the USA were DEHUMANIZED by calling them apes, aka deeming them of lower intelligence, and regarding them as subhuman.

People like the woman in the OP would love history to be erased so they can make all sorts of remarks like this with no repercussions.

But you're really not getting it. In the United States it is considered a racial slur when used against a black personality regardless of the intention or not. It's not a matter of implications in this case. This is an example of using a historical slur against a person belonging to a group of people who have been historically called this in the past.

So you are saying that by me interpreting a racial slur as a racial slur, I am the racist because I associate black people with apes?? Cringey to say the least.

Whether or not she meant it as racist isn't the point. The point is that it is racist and she shouldn't use that terminology to refer to people like that. If she thinks she looks ugly, she can simply say that she looks ugly.

I'm saying its definitely worth a discussion and there's been so much research and discussion on it. How interpretations can actually 'create' racism in situations.  

I started my post with devil's advocate which means I am going to give another side to the story. It doesn't mean I do or don't believe it to be racist. It means that I am trying to look at an entire spectrum of opinion. It's called being critical FYI. 

I think the biggest problem with the discussion of racism is that it results in a slander match of calling people; racists, ignorant, SJW, privileged etc or in your case 'cringey'. I should have simply walked in the thread said "Racist b****" and then walked out without a second thought...now isn't that actually ignorant? 

You can't ever seem to discuss racism in a civil and adult way. It's a shame because that's why there's never a solution. No one can agree on what racism is and what the best solution  is.  Educating children in schools may help however there's still no solution.
