It should have been the lead.  They could have used PI's production and beat, or a combination, or more... or the same.  Anything to make it the best bop it can be.  Anything can be changed around in studio.  DH is simply a better song, theme, and aesthetic than PI for a lead.  They screwed it all up a little bit, imo.

Edit: I can imagine the ladygaga.com promo wall of "Lady Gaga New Single Perfect Illusion" as "Diamond Heart" instead.  I would have peed my pants so much more seeing that.  It's a perfect song title.

I feel like the transition to this era would've been less of a shock if Diamond Heart was the first single. It would've helped the GP to get on board.

Sorry I thought I summed that up with 'I don't agree' or maybe I didn't dig in? I just don't see DH smashing, like its a good song but it's very traditional in a way and not mainstream enough. At least PI had more mainstream elements

Definitely the best Album track by quite a bit, PI is good but I just think DH is a better transition.
