And Beck's album did? :awkney:

I expected that answer. I personally believe that Beck's win was just a publicity stunt

You can make every album look bad this way. In fact 1989 is a really WELL written and produced pop album that was critically acclaimed and hugely successful. Her vocals are pretty good too for the type of music that she sings. You don't need to be Mariah Carey vocally to make a good album

I didn't say it was bad though. In my earlier post i said it was decent. So many albums actually reinvent the synthpop sounds in a different way, but in my opinion I don't think 1989 did anything new regarding its sound. In terms of being well written, lyrically, I think the album is quite basic and lacking in truly moving emotional lyrics, and sonically, the melodies and typical Max Martin style production again was repetitive and quite mundane. Bad Blood, I Know Places, and Wildest Dreams are the songs that come to mind. You don't need to be Mariah or Whitney but the fact is I would like 1989 infinitely more if it were to be sung by a fuller voice. Out of the Woods had SO much potential but her voice doesn't fit in with the production and imo gets lost and the song sounds somewhat mediocre as a result. Taylor has a lot of work to do with her vocals and having a more mature singing voice, but again that's just my opinion.

Kendrick's TPAB actually was more critically acclaimed than 1989 and experimented in so many new ways with rap/hip hop music. I won't even get into how lyrically, the political messages alone on TPAB are already infinitely better than anything on 1989.

well that's your opinion.I liked Taylor's album more despite having the unneeded Welcome To New York in it.I still believe that Kendrick's album is pretty good but it didn't have the impact or the success to be the album of the year anyway.

Maybe you as a pop stan are to blind to see how impactful TPAB actually was in the music scene as part of a revival of the political rap/hip hop that's been missing for such a long time. It also sold really well, maybe not as astronomically well as 1989 but it sold well enough to definitely be considered aoty. So many grammy aoty winners are not the most successful out of the nominees-Suburbs by Arcade Fire (which I really liked btw and beat TFM which should have won :nails: ) comes to mind. It's such a shame that a relatively mundane, unoriginal, and uninspired Max Martin produced album beat out an album seen as a pinnacle in the revival of thoughtful hip hop.

It did but not in the pop girls' circles. Kendrick's album is timeless and adds something new to the table. 1989 is good too, but it's nothing new. Also, please it cannot even touch PTB in terms of lyrics and message.

Irrelevant

The album was fine, it was definitely enjoyable IMO. But some tracks that I hate like I Wish You Would, Clean and You Are In Love. The best tracks were Welcome To New York, Out Of The Woods, All You Had To Do Was Stay, Wildest Dreams, I Know Places, Wonderland and New Romantics (which for some reason is in the deluxe edition.) But I couldn't see much emotion in her songs, her vocals were good but nothing special. The music videos weren't very amazing too. Shake It Off MV was fine, but gets boring, Blank Space was just hard to look at, Style seems simplistic and nice, Wildest Dreams was just fine, Out Of The Woods was the best one and New Romantics was basically a montage of the 1989 World Tour. Id give this album a 7/10.
