She didn't speak about Kesha and we know she PRIVATELY supported her. Our generation needs to put down the torches and pitchforks and give the Internet mob mentality a rest. Not speaking about something /=/ not caring My point isn't against her speaking out or needing to speak out on things It's the the fact that its so obvious she doesn't speak out due to protecting her brand Its just a sad reminder that her own personal gain means more to her than whats happening in society. That to me, outlines a person who doesn't care. But she'll be the first to donate money if theres a storm in Southern America, because she can use issues/events like that to help build her image rather than potentially hurt it
2007 5,291
lets call a spade a ****ing spade, 50% of you are mad at her cuz she didn't publicly confirm she's endorsing Hilary, cuz if she revealed who's she's voting for (or not voting at all) and it's not hilary y'all will be as mad; and the other 50% are pressed that she's the #1 artist of this decade and she just keeps getting bigger and bigger, and you would hold onto any reason to slam her. StrawberryBlond 14,888
I really don't approve of anyone being asked who they're going to vote for. It's clearly different in America, where people are happy to display their allegiance on bumper stickers but in the UK, we tend to keep our support a secret (or we did pre Scottish referendum and pre-Brexit). They say at dinner parties, never talk about politics, religion and sex. And I'm surprised that's not applied more to interviews. Witnessing the tension that occurred during the build up to the Scottish referendum, choosing to ask someone who wasn't a close friend or family member how they were going to vote was unthinkable, not even for the brave. Funnily enough, even Trump himself said he didn't like the negativity that build up and doesn't think the Scots would want to go through that again (about the only thing he's got right, far as I'm concerned). So, I don't blame Taylor for wanting to keep quiet. However... It's clear when she wants to protect her brand. The magazine is completely right when she says that doesn't want to talk about issues that don't directly affect her or are controversial or her take on it might alienate people. She's focused on being liked by everyone and doesn't want to say anything that could turn off her loyal fanbase, large following of conservatives and Republicans, parents who approve of who their kids are listening to. I really appreciated the fact that she reached out to Kesha and paid for her court bills, but the thing is, she didn't say a word about it, it was the media who found out about this private exchange. Now, why didn't she speak out about it, bring more attention the cause? Other female artists sure put their support out there publicly - Gaga, Ariana, Miley, Demi, Iggy, Kelly, Lily, Lorde, Fiona Apple, etc. And Adele even dedicated her BRIT award for best female to her, the most high profile support yet. Yet, Taylor did all her support in private. Beyonce, another one who wears her feminism on her sleeve, didn't show any support at all either. Isn't it funny that the 2 most prominent supporters of feminism in the music industry at the moment decided to keep any support behind closed doors or didn't show any at all? Oh, Taylor's happy to talk openly about feminism when it suits her. When she feels like she or a member of her squad has been the victim of sexism. Other than that, she doesn't seem that fussed. This is why feminism struggles to be taken seriously. We're too concerned about being likeable (which is, in itself, sexism). Feminism is about speaking for all women and not being afraid to speak out about harsh realities in the ends to providing equal rights and respect for women. But then you've got people like Taylor for whom it's all about business, marketing and image.

Buddy 5,686
I hate Taylor Swift, but she is not obliged to share her political opinion just because she's a public figure. In fact, for a lot of public figures it is best they don't share their opinion especially when their opinion is undecided or undeveloped, because that opinion can have a huge impact on the opinions of others and their own careers. This election is not like the others, both politicians are notably disliked by a large portion of the population. To advocate for one or the other is really a damned if you do or don't situation. It's the first time in a while if you claim to support the liberal side, liberals will look down on you for it. The only thing liberals seem to want you to speak up about it destroying Trump. The focus is wack.
That J 12,166
I'm not exactly sure when it changed but back in the day here in America, it was basically frowned upon to say who you voted for. It was a personal thing and people didn't go around asking either. I can tell you a lot of people have taken this very serious election over the borderline (pun intended) and now people who've been friends forever won't speak to each other. It's crazy. yASSsss 35,510
Adding to the chorus of Twitter eggs who beg Swift to make a political endorsement each day,the Daily Beast’s Amy Zimmerman decried the pop star’s “loud election silence” this summer. And last week, Fusion reporter Kelsey McKinney made the more explicit, tortured argument that “it’s time for Taylor Swift to say something about Donald Trump.” Since Swift is a self-proclaimed feminist, McKinney wrote, she has a duty to speak out against the candidate who has bragged about groping women. (Swift reportedly also experienced a sexual assault, which McKinney argues makes Swift somehow more obligated to provide the public with her political opinions.) “To remain silent is to remain complicit in every hateful statement” Trump makes, McKinney insisted. Two years ago, Swift began to embrace feminism as a marketing strategy, announcing in The Guardian her realization that being a feminist doesn’t mean that you “hate men.” Now, she parades around a squad of Victoria’s Secret Angels and Blake Lively and occasionally Lena Dunham because it makes her look fun and cool and supportive of other women, regardless of whether she is any of these things. Promoting girl power is good business. Denouncing a candidate who still has the support of 42 percent of Americans is not. To expect Swift to come to her senses and speak out against Trump is to misunderstand what she’s been selling all along. She only attempts to influence public opinion, however, on issues that directly affect her. In 2014, she wrote an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal lambasting streaming music services like Spotify for underpaying artists. (“Music is art, and art is important and rare. Important, rare things are valuable. Valuable things should be paid for.”) Last year, she wrote an “open letter” to Apple CEO Tim Cook asking him to further compensate the artists on Apple Music. Swift has no trouble speaking up about a political issue, if the political issue is making more money.
