Proud of Gaga: an ARTPOP-to-JOANNE story

Hi little Joanners,

I wanted to start this thread to spread a bit of positivity but also because I have something important to say: I am proud of being a fan of our beautiful Lady Gaga...

A few years ago, many of us may have felt like Gaga was artistically and emotionally over. Gaga was severely bashed by critics, her singles were considered as big flops, we only got two music videos for three singles as DWUW music video got cancelled, many projects never saw the light or appeared to be disappointing (the app, the fan contests, one music per song, etc). We faithful fans would be teased and mocked by other fanbases all the time, Gaga would be humiliated and said to be irrelevant by so many, and even betrayed by her so-called friends.

We know now Gaga was in deep depression at that time and ARTPOP was the musical expression of that depression. Some fans could understand ARTPOP and accept it with its flaws, some could not. In the darkest time of Gaga's career, we stayed strong and kept supporting her and her art.

Eventually, Gaga managed to rise again but it was not the same... G.U.Y got ignored when it was released, the artRave was enjoyable but it looked like Gaga was giving us what we were desperate for: the Lady Gaga from The Fame. Yet, that Lady Gaga was long dead. I personally felt like Stefani was still insecure. I felt like she wanted to show her true self, but she was afraid of disappointing her fans as she disppointed the GP. She kept on wearing the crazy outfits and singing pop records for the rest of the ARTPOP Era. In the end, she delivered us a crazy, but impersonal show. Stefani was still profoundly lost.

Then, Mister Tony Benett appeared in Stefani's life and broke her free from the enslaving pop culture. She could work now on her voice and showcase her actual vocal abilities like never before. She went on a succesful tour with her old friend, delivered a breathtaking, groundbreaking performance at the Oscar and released the wonderful, personal song Til It Happens to You. Soon, Stefani gave up on her eccentric persona and went back to who she truly was: an American woman from New York with Italian roots. The Cheek to Cheek era was probably the era during which she looked the happiest, and it felt so good to see her so confident.

Alongside her few acclaimed performances such as the National Anthem and another Oscar performance, Gaga was enrolled in AHS as The Countess. She delivered us with the darkest, yet charming and exciting visuals she has ever delivered since The Fame Monster or maybe Born This Way. It felt so good to see the dark, mysterious Gaga back as we used to know her. Eventually, the GP started to acknowledge and like her again. Confident, she started working on LG5 with her longtime friend and producer RedOne, alongside Niles Rodgers, Giorgio Moroder, DJ White Shadow and allegedly Diplo. She stated that her role in AHS inspired her to write new songs for her new album, and everything made us think Stefani was about to deliver us a new The Fame Monster.

Yet... LG5's team changed with time. RedOne was nowhere to be found when Stefani hit the studio, and seemed to be replaced by Mark Ronson. It is unknown what caused LG5's new musical direction: the death of her idol David Bowie? Relationship problems with her ex-fiancé Taylor? Family issues? Many fans are convinced there exist two versions of LG5: the RedOne, darkpop LG5 and the Mark Ronson, country/rock-influenced Joanne. When Perfect Illusion came out, some - if not many - were freaking out, because this is not what they expected, namely another Bad Romance. On Youtube some fans did not hesitate to express their disapproval of Gaga's new music, calling her flop and over. It just looked like it was ARTPOP again. However, the difference with ARTPOP was Stefani. She seemed so human, down-to-earth, true to herself, yet energetic and confident. In the end, that's what mattered the most.

Now, Joanne is out, the album we waited for since the artRave. Joanne is maybe Stefani's most personal and human album she has ever released. It is an album that takes broad-mindedness and maybe patience, but once you listen to it a few times you soon realize what an unexpected masterpiece Joanne is, maybe her best work so far. Until now, Joanne has been slaying the charts and so has Million Reasons. Stefani seems to have gained the love of the GP back, and everything lets us think this era will be sucessful and fruitful.

So let us all enjoy this era but always bear in mind what we have been through and what we learned: Stefani is a human being and what matters the most is the music and our experience of it.

Take care of you my fellow monsters

Ps: sorry it's a bit long but I needed to express how I feel.

Beautiful post :golfclap:

I'm glad Gaga changed her direction for Joanne. It's a side of her we desperately needed to hear. We were all so desperate to have Dark Gaga back, and that's what we were going to get too, but she changed direction to a completely new sound, and I'm so glad she did. It's been lovely to hear Gaga in such a positive and calm state, and it's even more lovely to share it with my friends, who I didn't think would ever like Gaga.

She wanted people to come together for Joanne, and I firmly believe she accomplished that.

Dissapointed "fans", deteriorating critics, pressured charts and sales will always be there.

Stefani did not expect to be this huge and the pressure really dug deep within ARTPOP. The album, however really great, did not succeed due to the betrayal of loyalty from the people she trusted. Shame.

I'm glad I never looked away from this woman. I truly believe she is the only musicians today that really knows music down to it's last string. I'm so glad I'm one of her biggest fan. Paws up.
