You do know Bill Clinton ORIGINALLY wanted gays to serve in the military openly, but the military threw a big hissy fit & the Republicans joined them in opposing this back in 1993.  It became a big media controversy & Bill Clinton had to relent & come to a compromise called DADT!  Little did he know at the time how disastrous it would be later implemented by homophobes in the military, because in his eyes at the time it was a compromise.  Which he now says was a mistake.  So contrary to your previous statements, the Clinton's HAVE been for gay rights!  The only thing that was out right against gay people was DOMA back in 1996, which at the time being for gay marriage was almost a total anathema in society.  And there was hardly a widely accepted societal concept(at the time) of this even being a RIGHT to begin with.  So check your facts before you essentially go calling the Clinton's homophobes!!!   :neyde::neyde::neyde:

So basically ur saying that what Bill did was okay because doing the right thing could've hurt his career? Is that a valid excuse for ****ing the gay community over?

Dont get me wrong, I support Clinton but the idea that we can forgive a politician because he did something to keep his job is ludicrous

Agree with you 100%, The Clintons set back gay rights massively with the singing of DADT AND DOMA. And now Clinton wants to be this big advocate for gay rights only when it suits her needs. Remember when she was a senetor she was against not only gay marriage but also civil unions.

What is the phrase, don't hate the player, hate the game. It applies here.

It's not ideal but it's not the fault of the politicians, it's the way the system was designed and the general idiocy of the electorate that makes it so.

I'm not trying to start a GGD debate but I fail to recognize how using inflammatory and hurtful language (against women and the queer community) is smart (even if he is making money or trolling people).  Coming from a social science and gender studies background, everything Milo stands for is in opposition to the recent canon of social-scientific research/theory.

And in the most recent post, I agree that both candidates haven't shown an authentic record of love and support for LGBTQ+ identities and communities (this is one of many reasons I have, instead, supported Bernie and Jill this election cycle).

Maybe because we need to stop getting bothered by what people say, and start learning to overcome different opinions by using our own inner capabilities/strengths.

The world will never be a place where everyone gets along...its constantly getting bigger. And if you truly believe in diversity, you can't be offended. You can only be tough, and yourself. :)

Like! People fail to realise that when DADT was first implemented, it was a compromise and at that time was not this big anti-gay thing it spiralled out to be. Was it ideal? Nope, but Bill did the little he could do with compromise. And yes, sometimes compromise is what you have to do to get stuff.

Anyone who tries to draw some equivalency between Hillary and Trump on gay rights is an utter moron. She is so far ahead of him.

The Presidential Nominee for the Republican Party is waving a rainbow flag. He has a nuanced position on LGBT rights, and doesn't speak about us as if we were sexual deviants.

Intolerant political tribalism wont allow members of this site to celebrate what is obviously a small but notable step forward.

There is nothing to celebrate, as this is pandering at its obvious (even more than some pandering Hillary has done). Any gay person who has done their research knows that Trump is not on our side, so he's supposed to be commended for this? Nope, not to me (and hopefully other people). It's 2016, not speaking about gay people as if they are sexual deviants is not a measure of gay friendliness, even for a republican

Pandering to a minority instead of demonizing them is a step forward. We should praise small steps, not scoff at them.

Trump's views on gay rights are nuanced, any gay person who has done their research would know this.

He doesn't support gay marriage, but supports civil partnerships. He believes it should be illegal for companies to fire an individual based on their sexual orientation. He also supports amending the Civil Rights Act to include LGBT Americans. He is not a religious fundamentalist like the runner up of the last presidential election, Rick Santorum, who compared homosexuality to bestiality. He is not a member of the homophobic LDS church like our last Republican Presidential nominee.

Hillary is without a doubt a better candidate for LGBT Americans (even if you set aside Don't Ask Don't Tell, The Defense of Marriage Act, the disgusting HIV travel ban, and the years of denying gay Americans the right to marry in the name of "morality"), but that doesn't mean we can't acknowledge and praise the obvious fact that Trump is the most progressive Republican Presidential Candidate ever when it comes to gay rights.

Yeah, they've done some ****ed up ****. And while I do support Hillary, I hate it when people excuse her or Bills actions because doing otherwise would've hurt them politically. You were elected to be a leader and to do the right thing. I expect you to fight for it. He shouldn't have passed those anti gay pieces of legislation. The fact he did to safeness his own career or to help his party doesn't make it any better. Don't make excuses, say sorry and admit it was messed up and move on. Like the man himself did. But I won't tolerate people sellout out minorities because it's convenient. If u do that, ur another *** for Trump to grab as far as I'm concerned.

And people may say compromise is important but I'm sorry, you don't compromise away the rights of Americans. Not everything is negotiable.

this legislation would undo anti discrimination laws against gay people, so he actually is okay with firing people because they're gay. He's also okay with healthcare discriminating against them and businesses too. This kind of makes adding them to the civil rights act meaningless if pretty much anyone can discriminate against them. If this is the best the GOP has for my LGBT friends, people I care about very much, I will not praise him or the GOP.

I really get what you're saying, but when are any of Trump's supposedly personal beliefs going to do anything? Noting that he wasn't "completely awful" in comparison to his counterparts doesn't do anything in the light of the fact that the GOP's platform is some of the most homophobic its ever been and he chose Pence, a man who supports conversion therapy and legalized discrimination against Gay people (masquerading as Religious Freedom) to be his VP, and has vowed to put people in the Supreme Court who will go against expanding gay rights and freedoms and even overturn gay marriage? :duck:

There have been prominent pro-gay republicans in the past, some of them are in congress now... I just don't think Trump deserves any praise for being a decent person on something when its not like he would do anything about it... If anything, that calls into question his integrity/willingness to play along with things he disagrees with, or it at least says he doesn't feel strongly enough to question his superiors, let alone his followers (who are anti-gay, anti minority in general)

"I support gay marriage, its totally fine with me, but ofc I'll do everything in my power to stop it" is basically all I hear when I see things like this, which strikes me as overwhelmingly two faced :rip:

Why celebrate something that is in effect not a victory at all?

"Amending the Civil Rights Act would grant the same protection to gay people that we give to other Americans—it’s only fair." - Donald Trump

Trump made the remarks during an extensive interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” when host Chuck Todd asked whether private companies should be able to terminate an employee based on sexual orientation.

“It’s a big discussion and I guess it’s getting a lot of negative rulings right now, that whole thing, and I’m willing to go with what the courts are saying,” Trump said.

Asked by Todd to clarify whether that means a company shouldn’t be able to fire an employee for being gay, Trump said, “I don’t think it should be a reason.”

If you want to be an ideological extremist and refuse to acknowledge progress that doesn't meet your standards, that is fine, but history will show that the one minority Trump isn't demonizing to gin up support is the gay community.

Donald Trump's positions on gay rights are basically the positions that were held by many politicians in the Democratic party a few years ago. They aren't all that different from what Hillary's were in her 2008 bid for the White House. This marks an evolution. We aren't being demonized by either Presidential candidate, we are being pandered too. That is noteworthy. The Republican Nominee for President of The United States is selling LGBT merchandise on his website, he isn't using us as a political scapegoat - that is a first.

Trump is a horrific political figure, and is hardly ideal when it comes to gay rights, but that doesn't mean we can't acknowledge what is obviously progress of some sort.
