They should just remove all of the critics and leave Metacritic to the GP and the Users until they come to their senses :grr:

Until then, this is Elvira saying unpleasant dreams.

Gurl this is mainstream media. They profit off of getting attention.

So shouldn't they be giving all albums negative reviews to piss off all fanbases and get all the attention?

Critics need to rely on narratives they create, because they aren't educated enough on the medium to do a critical analysis break down.

There has also been a shift in critics making reviews about themselves. Inserting themselves into the review, and the focus being more about them rather then art they are reviewing.

Expressing how art makes you feel, and what it evokes from you - is fine. But a lot of these critics maks it the sole point of the review. This is no longer criticism, as its more a consumer guide / tastemaker.

The other thing they do is go off on long tangents about current events and culture, and fail to connect the work they are reviewing to the essay they wrote. It's a narrative. A crutch.

And so this a ties back into how critics have shifted from once being scholars, to being personality driven narcissists and bloggers. And when you have critics like this, they are more likely to be personally petty towards things they don't like.

This isn't about an opinion. The review was horribly written. It's everything wrong with modern criticism personified. As OP points out, this is a person incapable of separating their personal biases, and using different standards for different things they like or dislike.

Even that would be understandable (since we all have bias and preference even on a subconscious level) - but at least have a critical break down of the album that is articulated well. At least explain to people where you are coming from.

This review is blogger 101. So what more could you expect. It's sadly become the norm. Expect 3,000 word essay from Pitchfork about Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump and race relations in this country, and something something about Joanne being the death of her pop career because all these things are totally related.

Honestly, I don't need further proof that some critics and self-proclaimed music authorities don't have any good or consistent reasons to dislike her work, they simply don't want to give her due credit.

It's big mainstream newspaper, they do not know much about music, for them it's important what is trendy and what story fits to the object of reporting > Joanne does not fit into her their rigid rating schema, for example when this album were from a big singer songwriter from let's say Elton John the opinionwould be  completely different. It's not that bad, they just don't know what they say often about music there. It's just a shame that an big newspaper can't appreciate an analog singer songwriter classical playful and soulful record like Joanne. They are used to hearing very polished autotuned technical songs these days from a popstar like Gaga, they can't open their minds i think.

While I don't like the review and think he's unprofessional, no one should ever be fired for something like this.

In the grand scheme of things, it's a review. I think the quality of the review will not stand the test of time, and will forever be a glaring spot on his career (and yes, Critics do cringe at past works they have done).

Ultimately it's not healthy to get wrapped up in something like this. It's worth talking about and being critical of it. I think the bigger discussion is criticism in general, and how far it's fallen off the tracks.

But getting a single reviewer fired won't do anything to change it, and it just brings us down to his level. I know this post wasn't being as literal.

I would also say, while in this case the review was legit unprofessional and poorly written, fans always risk riding a thin line of just being upset that someone was harsh to something they like. I would like to think most fans can separate their own opinions and feelings, and tell the difference between an unprofessional review and a negative review that they don't agree with. But when emotions are involved, those lines can blur. So calling for someone to get fired is never a sound idea (especially when those lines blur easily).

Hunny he's carrying the TNYT's name and for him to make up a review without actually listening to the record should be notified. It's his job and he's doing it really poorly. Any hungry journalist in America would probably kill to have his position.

That's up to the NYT to decide.  If they like the attention gotten by such articles, he will be valued by them.  Publications live off of sensationalism, controversy, and attention.  It's as shame, but they want to make money any way they can.

I live outside the space time continuum.

But wouldn't this type of publicity ruin their reputation  and not to mention their credibility as a news paper?

One would hope so, but it depends what their readers think.  It depends if their sales increase or decrease.  I would hope NYT has more discerning readers than the tabloids, but idk.
