Johnewayne 0
Joanne has a way more cohesive sound, although it is quite new,Ii can;t see myself getting tired of it. Only half of Lemonade is all that good, and the half that I do like, I can only listen to it in small increments, as I get tired of them.

That's a little pretentious. 3. That's a little bias and extreme. 4. Her music backs it up. I love Joanne with all my heart but Production wise and Lyrically Lemonade is far more forward pushing it and different. Beyonce has had her downfall with 4 but she picked herself up so I don't understand why you all think she succeeds because she is Beyonce. And why is it that when a white person gets critical acclaim no one takes into consideration their race but when a black person does we blame it on their race as if we didn't have a glass ceiling we had to break through. Yea that **** gets to me because I don't like these pseudo intelligent racist comments. 5. This whole comment was bias within itself. Actually a lot of stuff you say is bias and, dare I say again, borderline pseudo intelligent racism and sexism. I love gaga more than any other living artist on this earth and I was not a huge fan of Beyonce at all. But Beyonce and Lemonade are among some of her greatest work and I will not let you minimize her success by using her color and popularity against her. It is possible to be popular and have critical acclaim. 1. It depends who's listening to those topics. I know I certainly can't relate to them. If you've never been in a relationship, never been cheated on, or aren't black, then you can't relate to this album. Gaga brings up more universal topics in Joanne - Joanne, Million Reasons and Angel Down in particular. 2. I don't try to be pretentious. It's a fact that the public don't like to hear music that challenges them. That doesn't mean we all have to be listening to indie music, but it means that we could try embracing music that's more than mindless bops with simple lyrics from time to time. 3. Simply saying that finding an album with lack of cohesion worse than a cohesive album is a stupid thing is hardly bias or extreme. Thinking cohesiveness is what ultimately makes an album good or bad is bias and extreme. 4. I think they're maybe on the same level production wise. I don't see how Beyonce's being more different. She's pretty much still making her usual music, just with more personal moments in it. Gaga, on the other hand, is pushing herself out her comfort zone more and more as time goes on. Yes, 4 may have been a "failure," but it still sold well by today's standards and was met with good reviews - check out how good they were on Metacritic. This was despite her flopping with her lead single (which didn't fare well with critics, at that). When other artists have a bad start to the era, with floppy singles and mixed-negative reception, they can't get good album reviews. The critics were against Gaga for AP and her lead single did better than Run The World. You'll notice that critics tend to support artists who have a successful beginning because they don't want to look like fools by giving the album a good review when the public clearly aren't feeling it. You'll also notice that if the critics were negative to an artist that the public embraced, reviews will get more positive next time because they're afraid to look like fools in the eyes of the public. It's all so fake. But Beyonce seems to survive this bias that every other mainstream act endures. She's so protected in this industry. Having Jay as your husband really helps. When you're that famous and that powerful, you can make critics bow to you no matter what. Well, I don't bring up race when a white person gets critical acclaim because it's so rare for that to happen. I review many albums a year and I just looked over my book of reviews from 2015 and found that the majority of white female (yes, the female part is crucial too) had mixed/mediocre/negative reception but the majority of black females got positive/acclaim reception for their albums. 2016 is the same. I wouldn't normally point out racial divides like this, but when you do all this reviewing, you start noticing trends and this was one of them. And if we're going to add in black males, the divide only gets wider. Critics love albums from black males. Kanye has such a bad image with the public but the critics love him, which throws the whole "racist critic" idea out the window. Critics are still reviewing male rap albums as if it were the 90's golden age which is weird because they're always telling us the rap of today isn't the same (but they're giving it good reviews!) I guess when black people are associated with having soul and being cool, it helps in the perception of their work whereas whites are stereotyped as the opposite. And blacks are seen as owning certain genres whereas whites are not (except country). This is not pseudo intelligent racism and sexism, it's an honest observation. Sometimes, you don't always get the results you want, but it is what is is. Trust me, I'll call out racism when I see it and it does occur in the industry, but when we're talking about critical reception in particular, we need to stop pretending that black artists have it so hard. It's simply incorrect. 5. Again, this isn't bias, this is an honest observation of critics. The only ones who seem to know their own minds are Robert Christgau and Slant Magazine. Everyone else is a suck-up, too easily impressed or they're getting paid for good reviews. I simply refuse to believe that music critics in this day and age think the majority of music is acceptable or better than average. Most of it is medicore as hell with only a handful of good here and there. Reviewing albums can get quite a drag until the later part of the year when the better ones start coming in. I am not a borderline psuedo racist or sexist (do you realise how pretentious it is to keep saying psuedo?), I'm just pointing out blatant trends on the music review scene. Critics may not be aware that they're doing this, but they are, whether they realise it or not. I won't argue about Lemonade being among her greatest work (I do think it is, even though I think it's merely ok) but I think Beyonce has a whole lot of other factors that make her appear so awesome in the eyes of the media. If every artist had her level of PR, they'd be slaying too. Yes, it is possible to be popular and have critical acclaim, but like I said, being popular can help you get critical acclaim. Why else do you think Gaga got so many good reviews up to and including BTW? Because critics support what the public are feeling, what they're making successful, what the media are supporting. But when an artist is down, critics put the boot in no matter how good the material is. It's rare that they do support an artist who's going through a bad patch. She has more average albums than lauded ones. Take a moment to think of just flexibility, love, and trust~
boyerased 2,886
Lemonade is more sonically diverse than Joanne. Maybe due to its lenght. They're both cohesive solid albums. Joanne comes off as more sincere and authentic than Lemonade is. Lemonade has more polish and is clearly more ambitious while Joanne is more personal and raw. Anyways the good thing is that both singers are releasing good albums and we should enjoy them.
