PMKKARDASHiAN 8,570
Spoiler I omitted PI and MR because I wanted to include songs we hadn't heard, and I left out Angel Down because I ran out of time I understand there will be countless threads stating varying opinions and reviews on Joanne, and there's no reason why my opinion, or any others, should influence your own judgment on this album, I just want to put my own experience and perception out there. I'll preface this "review" by stating I was one of the Little Negativesters would complained about how "country" it all sounded and how I was not on board with this direction, but the album surprised me, and here's why: Diamond Heart, 8/10 I was the most excited to hear this song. It sounded like an absolute anthem of a song. It starts off slow, and swells into the chorus that I can foresee myself screaming while I sing a long. It retreats before swelling into the chorus again. The lyrics are easy, a bit unusual at times, but over all very catchy and relatable. The final rendention of the chorus is perfection! This is a solid gaga song and an exceptional opener to the album A-YO, 6.8/10 I was the least excited to hear this after its hype to the heavens before it's initial snippet leak. The snippet left me thinking this would be a western country line dance I'd have no interest partaking in. The final song, however, is good. It's not so much country as it is a steady combination of old school rock and western influences on an almost genreless track. By genreless, I mean, I can't put a distinct finger on what genre this belongs in. Pop, no. Country, no. Rock, no. This makes for an interesting and likeable track, as it could fit into a plethora of genres. The vocals are good, and the lyrics are fun and easy. Joanne, 6.2/10 This was a song I figured I would not like, and while for me it's not a stand out on the album, even though it's the title track, it's a sweet song, with a good message about a loved one. Gagas vocals are soft at times, then sharpen at some parts. The music is very whimsical and creates a cushiony pallet for gaga to showcase her vocie. John Wayne, 7.1/10 Another track I was not anticipating because of the snippet. I just couldn't cope with the fact that Joanne would sound so country. This song, like A-YO, has the same old rock and western fused sounds, on a genreless track, and I enjoy it a lot! The lyrics are relatable and the vocals are quite enjoyable. My favorite part is the final instrumental which blends this interesting rock, western, techno sound, and I wish the whole song had used that soung because it's so interesting and well blended! Dancin In Circles, 7.8/10 Probably the most anticipated track, and for good reason, even though this is a case where hype almost foreshadowed the song. The track has pulled a carribean/reggea beat as the focal point, with the same westernish undertones John Wayne and A-YO have. The lyrics are very good, and, of course, so are gagas vocals, especially the belt towards the end of the song. My only problem is my expectations had been built so high, this song didn't quite reach them, but the song is stellar non the less. It's my own hype that is the only problem with this song Sinners Prayer, 6.8/10 Another track where I was less than thrilled with the perceived "country" sound, which has sense proven me wrong. While I don't care for the song, I do enjoy gagas voice, and the guitars through out are a high light for the song and really add something special. This song probably has the most western influence and does it so well and so unapologetically. Come To Mama, 7/10 One of the few tracks I thought I'd enjoy, turned out to be slightly disappointing, due in part to the hype that was built around it. The music is the winner of this song, borrowing from 50s and 60s band stand sounds, with accompanying background vocals. The message behind to song is a good one, delivered with gagas lower vocals that give the song soul. This, like a few others, is almost genreless, which is a pattern for the album. Hey Girl, 7.6/10 I wanted to hear this song so badly after the snippet, because Florences vocal left me hungry for more! I've not heard anything from her but The Dog Days Are Over and I'm surprised how much I enjoyed her voice! This song is a ping pong feature, as the girls sing back and forth. Both voices are phenomenal, and sound so well together! The music sounds, to me, very 70s fused with some techno, early 2000s rifts and synths. Joanne, while not the album I was expecting, is a good album, and punctuated with a few songs that could easily stand among gagas best. As a collective piece, the album flows well together, while the themes run through out most of the tracks and are blended almost seamlessly, without putting itself into any specific musical box. I wouldn't know who to show this album, because it comes off almost blank in its delivery, but fused with many other genres. It's an album almost anyone could enjoy.
