Lets Be Honest: Perfect Illusion is a Letdown

Until 1:50 de Build Up is massive! But then we get the key change. While it's fresh, the key change kills the momentum and the songs restarts (for me at least), trying to build up again but in a boring repetitive way.

When I hear PI I feel the rush and adrenaline, but after the 1:50 and the key change I feel "off" and it seems that someone is beating a dead horse.

If I had to rate it, the first 1:50 is A+

The rest is F...

That's exactly how I feel about it.

The bridge is kind of amazing, honestly. But because the chorus is so repetitive, the song needed a lot more than a key change after that to really have oomph.

But all there is after that bridge is just more of her screaming "it wasn't lahv, it was a purfect illooshan" and at that point I just don't feel like listening to the song anymore.

The build-up is good but the "climax" is underwhelming. As a result the song kind of fails. For me, at least.

There's so much criticism on it already that I don't want to add fuel to the fire. Wish we could just let it go and move on.

That's how I feel about Gaga in recent times.

I agree w pretty much everything. The key change is also very telling. Like why did the song need it? The song wasn't even building up to anything and it just comes off as a  desperate attempt to sound epic. I fell in love with gagas music because of her strong pop sensibilities and I feel like its nowhere to be seen on PI. If the rest of the album is as messy and all over the place I might have to put gaga in second place and crown Carly Rae Jepsen my new pop queen :laughga:

Let's be respectful with one another...  Everyone has their own take and opinion on the song. Doesn't make them a flop fan or a fake monster just because they dislike it.:duck:

I started out being disappointed to playing it everyday so many times just like I did with Applause. To be really honest, it is a pure pop song, just that it sounds really different from her previous material and also not radio friendly or trend-following like any of the top current songs.

But isn't this what she said exactly about JOANNE, that it was a great pop record that just doesn't conform to the radio trends currently? She said it was more from a place of passion in making music with her friends and collaborators.

I think we should just all sit back and enjoy the PI era, or sit tight and wait along for JOANNE because it's literally been just ONE song released. It isn't indicative of the album. Plus she has gone through so much from trying to sell her records furiously the past few albums she probably just wants to take a break, make music she enjoys and relaxes with without any pressure to succeed. She is just taking a break from her usual style and this is just the way she feels like rolling now. It doesn't mean we wont have crazy, relatable, catchy avant garde or dark pop songs like the ones she did in the past. She's going to make pop music all the way throughout her career. I think we all need to relax, and enjoy what she is giving to us right now. JOANNE is coming in less than a month!!!!! :excited2:

I've been a fan since the days of pounding out Poker Face and Starstruck on Project Playlist in 2008, to the impossible sophomore hype of The Fame Monster (even non singles) being played like The Pop Bible in every gay club in 2010, to the semi disturbing yet exhilarating culture like obsession of Gaga during the Born This Way era, the eventual collapsing of her tour, the somewhat arrogant and lower quality aesthetic of ARTPOP and it's driving fan pandering sound losing steam....through the hopeful silver lining that was C2C....all the way to the wait this month that was the beginning of Gaga's pre-media-dubbed "comeback era". I've been here for a long time. I'm here now, and albeit interested in Joanne, extremely underwhelmed with Perfect Illusion. Why? Here's a list:

5. The song is so over the top, it literally becomes annoying. It doesn't build. Even it's surprising key change doesn't help it build, but only keeps beating your ears. We get it....you're passionate Gaga. But you used to be able to transform that passion into less obvious, and more clever ways.

4. It can't decide if it wants to make you Dance or beat someone. And NOT in a mosh pit sort of essence. It's trying to be a pop song with its layout, sitting over a hard-hitting four count beat, introduced by a weird alt electronic shrill, pushed forward by guitar and drums, while still managing to offer Springsteen vocals over a kind of Pat Benetar vibe. And when it tries to throw back into a disco undertone in its breakdown, it leaves you more lost. This song is all over the place.

3. Lyrically it is not Gaga's most clever work. It reminds me of ARTPOP, a cool sounding concept that is never really delved into in the actual lyrical content. When will Gaga release a song where she doesn't have to explain it's meaning in an interview? Bring the depthy interesting interview talk into the song, not on Elvis Duran.

2. It's no banger. And it's no great experiment either. I actually think Gaga is good at writing pop. It's when she tries to be deep and artistic and political that things get messy. Gaga's weirdness should come out naturally by trying to write great pop music again. Not trying to use pop to make her weird aesthetic popular. That didn't work on ARTPOP, and it's not working here either.

1. Perfect Illusion is not single worthy. I understand trying to bring something new to the table, but it must be forward thinking and boundary pushing. (Ahem The Fame/Monster). This sounds exactly like what it is: a pop star looking to maintain relevance by ironically not being able to admit what they're creating is not relevant. You can't force that. No matter how many times you hit the repeat button.

Last comment: I still have faith for single #2. I don't believe Joanne is over. I do believe that Perfect Illusion is a very annoying attempt at a comeback, and Gaga needs to start doing what she does best again: make a good POP record.

THANK YOU FOR WRITING THIS. ITS TRUTHFUL AND HONEST AND I 100% AGREE WITH YOU. UNFORTUNATELY NOW YOU WILL HAVE TO DEAL WITH ALL OF THE CHILDISH RESPONSES "FLOP" "PI SLAYS SO HARD" "YOURE A TROLL" "GURL BYE"

I will agree it has some unorthodox characteristics. I think its a great song but now that I too have had time to digest it, Interscope **** the bed on this one. Either they picked it to set expectations low for the album or they seriously have no clue about what makes a radio song a hit song.

Its a good album song for sure but single worthy? I really dont know at this point.

Out of all the people being critical of PI, this OP is the most well executed.

the song is just not that good. thanks for sharing, I agree with you 100%. Joanne is not over, but she really had to bring it with this first single and she didn't. this will surely affect sales and streams for the album altogether which is a huge let down. I don't understand why people keep saying that they don't care about sales or gaga doing well. OF COURSE I want her to do well because if she doesn't, her team won't tour as much as she used to and they'll be less money  for music videos, less singles off the album, etc. It's really a shame that many of you guys keep joking around about her being an "indie" artist. Words are powerful. We don't need any more negative energy.

It's not one of her most brilliant songs. It hasn't let me down so to speak.. I think I was just expecting something superior considering the legendary talent that worked on the song. I'm surprised Ronson produced something so messy.
