Why did Adele's team choose "Hello"? Why did Katy have to announce that Rise isn't the lead single?

What you implied with your post is, since the "industry has changed" Gaga has to adapt to those changes to stay relevant. 

If this is all about the music and her true self, there should be no need to adapt to a perceived change.

No, there isn't. Anything can be a smash nowadays and the streaming power over sales is helping that.

If Adele's team in two years decides to put out fart noises of her as sinlge people will buy it. She had the GP and the hype in her favor. Katy's 'Rise' was since the beginning a buzz single.

Don't put words on my comment, I didn't say she has to adapt herself to anything, read it again. It says that in this moment in the music industry there's no 'single material' or 'not single material'. Anything can become a smash, the rules has changed, radio is not attached to pop songs like before.

If anything can really be a smash, then the chart would be filled with album tracks, not lead singles, 2nd singles and so on.

Radio and pop are still very attached if Pop = Top 40. Pop as a genre has changed these last few years, but since you say Gaga doesn't have adapt, that would be irrelevant to the discussion.

We'll know when we listen to the album. In my opinion, I wouldn't be surprised if Perfect Illusion ends up being my least favorite song on the album (or one of them) because Gaga has done this in the past. She has released Born This Way and Applause, when so many other great tracks are on the album. I'm not saying one song or the other is better lead single material because things happen all the time and we don't know how the world reacts to a song.

If Gaga had released Marry The Night as she wanted as the lead single back then, it'd have probably been huge, not as huge as Born This Way because of the message, but obviously everyone was waiting for her album after The Fame Monster hype. 

Applause is a safe song, maybe too safe for a Gaga song. It was rumored that Aura was going to be the lead single and it'd have been an interesting choice, but we know it's such a weird song and would've turned off a lot of people if it was the "face of the album", they also had Sex Dreams in mind, probably Venus, etc. Then the fans wanted GUY because it was a "Smash waiting to happen" and look how that went.

My point is, we never really know how a single is going to perform. Some songs are written just for the sake of getting a single treatment and they end up getting ignored or they just explode on the radio. It's been like that for years, you just never know what is going to be catchy to everyone. The music industry is very unpredictable, even during Elvis days.

Likewise with people yearning for her fame monster days, are fans who cant accept this particular album will not be GP friendly. 

 

Gaga is a grown woman, her intent isnt to chase the charts, and those fans encouraging others to like it for the sake of her "popularity" are not doing anyone any service.
