Gaga as an "indie" artist

It doesn't even make sense, the definition of indie means not signed to a major record label or an "underground" or "undiscovered" artist. Gaga has been doing mainstream successful pop for 8 years, she is the complete opposite of indie. I fear this direction is going to hurt her in the long run

I think her record label will treat Joanne as an indie project, with the budget of an Indie artist, i think that's what they meant, could be wrong though.

They're going with the, Why promote her if they already know her, mentality. They will let the music speak for itself. I think it could backfire.

You're right, if Gaga really wanted an indie release, she would pull a Miley and release a "Stefani Germanotta & Ha Dead Monsterz" which, because of contractual obligations, would not get Gaga her coins. Still waiting for to do something along the lines of "I Sit on Acid":

I think they meant indie like Lana Del Rey and Florence and the machine.  Not like a real indie artist.

There are different types of albums.  We see a lot of commercial pop albums, pretty much all of Gaga's albums are commercial pop. Joanne seems more akin to an undergroundish album. But it's Gaga so everyone will know about it.

People need to start looking at the art instead of the artist. The product should be the only thing that matters, not the creator

Is more indie in the sense of indie style and indie music rather than the whole commercial aspect of it.

That's the real meaning of an indie artist, yes. But what they could mean is the music itself, more like being "alternative".

I honestly take the indie artist thing with a grain of salt for a number of reasons.

1) Her album is being promoted via major radio stations, which unless she's paying for out of her pocket alone, a record label that wants to treat you as an indie project would never do.

2) She's premiering the PI MV during Scream Queens, a show that's relatively popular amongst teens and young adults. Again, if she was just going the indie route, her MV would just go straight to YouTube, etc. This is a very obvious marketing strategy.

3) The obvious reason that its being treated as her major release. While she's not doing the ideal pop star promo, it's still promo that major artists would do. Indie artists would not.

Plus wasn't that just another insider account that said the whole indie thing? Regardless of who they are, unless Interscope confirms this, it's not really a thing that should play any role in the eyes of the public or her fans.

Free My Mind

y'all are taking it too literal

what it means is she's gonna be taking a lot more of a "relaxed" and "cool" approach to promoting the record. She doesn't want to be in everyones face with it, let the music do the talking and all that.

Indie artists are a lot free-er than popstars, because they don't have the pressure of the charts - this is something I think Gaga has been jealous of in the past.
