Considering the song and theme wasn't even her idea, it probably wasn't about anyone (at least in her life) in particular.

You're  right I forgot she don't write her own music anymore :classy:

Considering what we know about the writing process I'm fairly certain the initial intention was just about general love, and the social media perspective was something she interpreted later to give it more depth after the song was made.

Not that there is anything wrong with that though.

Yeah, she totally had Mark and the boys write a song about her father's dead sister for her too.

I don't think it was written about Taylor or social media. I think it was written to be a catchy song with a chorus that is vague enough to apply to a host of subjects. It's only now that she is being asked about it that she is reflecting on what the song means to her, and how it is applicable to her life and her art.

What the song means to her as the creator is less important than what the song means to you as the audience.

What I like most about Regina Spektor's approach to song writing is her refusal to discuss what her songs mean. She think it's "gross."

Just let the song be whatever you want it to be.

Beyoncé ghost wrote it. Joanne is clearly a fake  Okcupid profile she made to catch Jay and it's about being a single woman living like it's your last day (because you got heartbroken).

I don't believe any of her abstract deep explanations.

The closest possible explanation could be that this seemingly perfect person was a social media user who was using the apps to make a certain impression, but that's about as far as it goes.

Going off of what she has said, I see PI as quite universal.  Pretty much everything in life is an illusion of sorts (which, to me, is a result of socialization, culture, performance, and so forth).  Reminds me of Marina and the Diamonds' song "Savages" where she says, "Underneath it all, we're just savages, Hidden behind shirts, ties and marriages, How could we expect anything at all, We're just animals, still learning how to crawl."  While I don't invest in biology as a justification for human behavior, the scripts we follow and ways we behave do seem to be an illusion given a certain socio-historical context (say, 1950s nuclear family in 'Murica, 2016's technologies, oral tradition in religion, capitalism :fthis:,  etc) .  [Sorry-- former sociology student, here].  Love ya, GGD!

its not about media, im sure they thought of that after they made a song, to make the song more relatable :awkney:

its about taylor ofc, and its also obvious they tell interviewers to not ask her questions about taylor

What if she's not talking about Taylor, but she's talking about the "fans" that don't care about her as an artist, and only care about the charts? We were the perfect illusion all along. What kind of drag?
