I try to channel her sweet and giving nature everyday in my life. Homeless-ness is a real problem in NYC. We have one of the most expensive housing markets in the U.S. When I still lived there, there were days I laid awake at night wondering how I could afford yet another rent increase. When I go back there for holidays, I always try to donate a dollar here and there to the homeless. My friends always ask me "why" and it's like "trust me I've come so close to being in their situation before". I love you monsters. Healthcare is free and even dental provisions can be made to people without means... I have worked in the mental health field for a while, and even have members of my family who suffer from severe diagnoses, and can name MANY people who would end up homeless if they didn't have a support system of family and/or friends. So yes, there are many legitimate reasons of why people are on the streets and they're not addicted. However, mental health problems that are left untreated and unsupported can lead to drug addiction, and living homeless with no hope can ALSO push someone into taking drugs and becoming addicted. You never know why someone is homeless or why they are addicted or whether or not addiction is what actually caused them to be homeless. It's best not to make assumptions.
