Point well taken.

I'm always shocked and genuinely amazed when I see people on GGD who love music other than top 40 mainstream pop music, because that is literally all I ever see discussed on here.

From my perspective, there is just such a vast expanse of music out there that to visit this site and see people limited in their scope to top 40 mainstream pop music is sad - because anything but mainstream top 40 pop music doesn't get the same exposure in culture.

The point of my original post is - ultimately - to point out that there is a vast amount of amazing music besides mainstream top 40 pop music (cough cough).

I am always heartened when I see people on GGD talking about people like Bjork or Marina, for example - because it shows me that there are people on here who are actually into MUSIC not just celebrity obsession.

I'd love to see more and more people on GGD talk about music outside of the realm of mainstream pop culture. Yes, maybe my perspective is pretentious and snobby. Oops. I don't care.

I appreciate you listening. None of it's personal, I just find it very annoying when people seem to use music as a way to be judgemental and negative towards others because it's my only passion. Music should be a source of positivity, not of fighting. I don't believe anyone who says they love music if they have to trod on other people's tastes and opinions to get a point across. There are many valid issues to raise about the industry and how mainstream music is presented, but in terms of genres there isn't one correct answer.

Honestly, I'm surprised you say that. I think there's quite a lot of variation on here as far as taste goes. Sure the popular artists are more noticeable, because they're... popular. But there are fanbases of music from different eras, genres and countries here.

I know that there's a lot of great music outside of top 40. I rarely listen to that stuff myself apart from a select few artists. But again, you could've made a thread discussing these less popular artists rather than coming here and telling everyone your taste is better than theirs and their "garbage" :rip: That's not the way to get people to open their minds, imo.

The "oops I don't care"... really? It was going so well. Lol. Ironically that makes you sound like the "celebrity obsessed", as you say, stans that argue in gifs and "sassy" catchphrases on here. What's the need for that?

I kinda feel the same way...

Not that I "hate" pop music, I just don't usually consume it, cuz it tends to feel awful in my ears...I guess it has a lot to do with what informs one's musical taste. I mean, I think someone who grew up listening to whatever is charting on the Hot100 or whatever the radio is serving is more likely to enjoy pop music...that's not my background, that's not how my taste was formed, which is why, I guess, pop music in general doesn't appeal to me...

ATTENTION: (bad) jokes and sarcasm are still a thing, so don't take everything I say literally. Thank you.

I love all the music you posted!

Gaga hasn't made music that different than any of the other girls, she is a pop artist, so far, mostly. Unless you mean you prefer her jazz stuff. But at her peak TFM, no one was doing it better than Gaga! Here's to hoping LG5 blows us all away with some amazing pop!

Hey, I was gonna maybe start a new topic for this article that was just shared with me, but I'm not sure how, so, well, here it is:

I understand what you said about how Gaga is so unique from other mainstream artists, specifically from other pop artists.

I don"t hate pop but I just didn't give an F about music in general. I felt it was not that important. (Dont kill me music lovers)

Before Gaga, i only have random songs i listen to just because they are popular songs I hear everyday or it is associated to a specific memory or event. I never paid attention to music in general apart from catchy background pop music i hear. Majority of songs i had were classical music to help me study and the random popular songs i hear and that's it. I never paid attention to musicians or artists or who they are apart from the general face recognition (inevitable because of the news) and naming a couple of their popular songs.

Heck, i didnt know what genre of music i like because i just pick random songs from the feelings it represents (happy and upbeat, sad and slow, angry and shouty, sleepy, rebellious, nice song to drive to).

Gaga came along and her initial popularity made me think she was just one of those random artists so i downloaded her songs. I got to hear her sing speechless in Ellen and I was just blown away. I then started to read more about her, who she is as a person and artist, and listened to her music specifically with the acoustic renditions of her songs. I listened to other songs of other pop artists, the LIVE ones, and they are ok and still catchy but there's something missing from it and as you said, it was lacking soul or something.

I'm more familiar with other pop artists now, i like some of their songs, but they just remain a name and a tune in my head and nothing more. A couple of catchy songs just doesn't make me their fan the way I stan for Gaga. As a non music fan, me liking Gaga took years for me to understand that's why I was not an instant fan in the fame era and took more research for me to stan her. It also helps i like her as a person, someone weird and different that I can relate to.

I just wanna say I understand how Gaga is different from others and I like that here in GGD, i get exposed to different genres of music. I think it's more like the lived experience of listening to music for me, than just listening to music just because.

She definitely does. She even said in an interview she wants her songs to get radio play and she thinks she has something to add to pop music. I think with Collxtion II we'll see a more ambitious effort to become widely known.

mmm nope, when they asked her on tumblr does she want to sign to a big record label she declined

I would have agreed more with this thread if I hadn't seen the OP's more condescending posts later on. Oh well.

Been a long time but I'm back in town, and this time I'm not leaving without you

yeah. i hear you. i try really hard to be non-judgmental overall, but pop music is one of those things that i have an extremely difficult time being non-judgmental about. i totally get that i'm being condescending. *shrugs*
