She's not solo, she's featured on someone else's song, so it's not her hit. Being a featured artist is where it's at. It's that simple. I swear, the public don't even really seem to mind who's on a featured track these days. It could be Hitler for all they care. Some of the most obscure artists (Ayah Marar, John Martin, Becky Hill, etc) and some of the most floppiest artists (Kelis, Florence, John Newman, etc). have been able to get hits via the 'featuring on a producer's record' method. Even Xtina got some brief respites from her career downturn by featuring on successful songs for Pitbull and A Great Big World. Then the world moves on from these people and we never get a hit from them again. Halsey is no different. I like her but there's no way she got a hit (which technically isn't even hers) through her name alone.

But it is to do with gender, because you specifically pointed them out as girls, even in this post. That is their gender, no? That is the factor that has caused you to group them all together, no? I simply asked why that is. Why are we not comparing her achievement to popular male artists without #1s like Nick Jonas, 5 Seconds of Summer and Shawn Mendes? I'm genuinely curious.

Never said it was anything about misogyny so I'm confused that you chose to bring that up.

There's nothing remotely sexist in what they said. There is nothing wrong with comparing an artist to other artists of the same gender as them particularly if the genre is the same. If the OP compared them to artists who do not share Halsey's genre, I could totally get your point. But it's clear that she's just being compared to other pop girls, a genre (and in this case, sub-section) where competition is rife and you will be compared. Pop females are handled differently to pop males, expectations are different (we all know it's much easier for a male artist to get a hit than a female) so it only makes sense to compare an pop artist's achievements to others of the same gender. Comparing female achievements, or lack thereof to males, is always so depressing and highlights how far women have yet to go before they reach the same kind of respect in the industry that men have. Males have always been compared to other males too, it's just how it works. Sure, you could argue that they'd find it emasculating to be compared to women but it's not, it's more to do with simple categorisation. I have absolutely no problem with being compared to other women for any reason (on the contrary, I'd be downright offended to be compared to men in some cases, especially if the talk is centered around achievements). Your intentions are all well and good, but seriously, take it from a woman, there is no sexism here, and saying that there potentially is can actually make the situation worse.

Because she was lucky enough to be featured on an act that already got 2 BB Top 10's THIS YEAR with each single bigger than the one prior. She is replaceable with any other female artist singing her part. Congrats tho.

Because those are who are commonly referred to as the "pop girls". I honestly didn't even think about those artists, but feel free to add them to the discussion. You make a good point, but I was just comparing Halsey to other pop girls who are mentioned the most on GGD/ATRL/Twitter etc.

Okay. I mean I do understand why this would be a discussion and it isn't surprising, but I don't understand why it's always about girls. I don't mean to direct my frustration with you at this specifically and I don't mean to come across as accusatory, it's my problem with stan culture as a whole.

These kind of discussions come up all the time framed in the way that your OP is, and it's framed that way to be "shady" and essentially cause arguments. I hate to use this phrase because it's basically become a cliche at this point but it really is pitting women against each other in a way that we rarely see with male artists. I don't know why.

No, you didn't say it, but you appeared to be impying that there was subtle sexism afoot. I'm simply saying as a woman that this conversation really isn't as serious as some people like to think it is. The music industry is competitive, thus, everyone is compared. Boybands have been pitted against each other since their conception. The latest male heartthrob is always compared to the previous male heartthrob and it's suggested if the previous one's time is up now. Both men and women are pitted against each other respectively in the industry and there's nothing wrong with it. It's just natural human instinct to compare similarities.

It's not about getting off your back, I would have responded the same if anyone else had said this. I just see a post that I think is worth replying to, that's all. I never intend to be personal.

Just pointing out, if you want to be feminist and help advance the female profile, you really should be more respectful to women who want to engage with you on those very topics, as opposed to swearing at them (which is always very hurtful and threatening when a man does this to us) and attempting to silence them whenever they try to point out flaws in your way of thinking. If you want to be taken seriously as a male feminist, these are things you will have to take stock of.
