The Child 18,997
No I hated it, I hated it even more when the music video came out then I saw her performing it at the VMAs and I completely loved it, I loved how she was enjoying herself and I guess that reflected on me liking the song. ‘If religion be the cause of disunity, then irreligion is surely to be preferred.’ ‘Abdu’l-Bahá

donutellha 13,819
I liked the production at the time and didn't pay attention to the lyrics. Walk down the runway but don't puke, it's okay. You just had 10 donuts today. Without frosting.
Klou 2,414
I was soooo disappointed when I first heard it. It sounded like an incredibly basic Jordin Sparks song. Then 10 or so listens later...
lavenderblondee 3,695
I loved it, a lot. It was a cute and simple song and I thought that was what she needed after some of the production on BTW. I hope I have even half the feelings I had when I first heart BTW and Applause. I loved both on first listen. But, my expectations were also a bit different because of that snippet of Applause that was being passed around Tumblr. it was such a low quality awkward section of the song. Benji 20,113
I've only ever liked it. Most of it is f*cking awesome and that instrumental is fire but those verses are horrendous beyond belief. I understand what she's trying to do and explaining but it comes across so try-hardy that it doesn't work.
avalon x 4,153
I actually hated it on first listen. The intro sounded cheap and the pre-chorus was cringeworthy. The bridge was way underwhelming. I think it's my favorite song now.

PaperIz 7,346
I've loved it since the first listen. It's one of those songs I can never listen to loud enough Human generated art
iMonster 1,037
Yes. Everything about it on first listen was what I was hoping Gaga would've came back with. Its my favorite single track after Bad Romance. All other (first) singles grew on me and became special. Though Bad Romance and Applause are my favorite first singles from albums. BlaqJezus 1,027
I loved Applause on first listen, and never really got what people were saying when they called it generic or badly written. It is an ode to her fanbase, among many others, and no other artist would call for Applause the way she does, because the notion of old world fame and entertainment is lost of mostly untalented industry fakes. The video only made it better, with the cinematics so sharp and layered next to each other until a big finish where she managed to push out all the pain and pay homage to it. I don't think Applause is really a basic man's song though, it takes some thinking to fully grasp, and so I believe that may have been the reason it took some time for it to catch on. Still much love for it, and i adore that video!
