Rihanna will NEVER be a Legend

I agree. She's relevant to this generation but once she gets older and is no longer cool and starts losing her looks and sex appeal, she'll be done because those things are what has led to her success, it sure as hell hasn't been quality (with some exceptions like Diamonds, of course). Her music wouldn't have been accepted if it came from someone older, not cool, not as pretty or sexy. She gets her success because she aims for what's hot right now, but her timeless songs are few and far between. Work wouldn't have done well in any other time but now, for example. But years from now, we'll be wondering what we ever saw in it. And she nearly always collabs with the most obvious people (she's on her 4th Drake collab now) so that they can help her to get a hit. Look at all her featured songs - mostly all young, modern, current, successful people. She knows what sells. But honestly, she has so many singles and so many flops that the public can't keep up, so her discography is not as memorable as you would think. For people who don't live their life in pop forums, they'd be hard pushed to name more than 5 Rihanna songs. Chart success doesn't necessarily equal iconic.

Look at what I said above. And how does being stylish and "fresher" make you more talented? More open minded in terms of collaboraters? She nearly always works with the most obvious hitmakers! Gaga's the one working with little known names and golden oldies! And Rihanna has never effed up massively? She has about a 50/50 hit/flop ration per album. Only 2 singles became hits from TTT and Unapologetic, Anti's initial singles got dropped and there's only been one big worldwide hit from the eventual album up until now. She usually only has 2 hits tops per album (the first two singles, at that) and the rest of the numerous singles flop. If she didn't put out an album every year to compensate for that, people would pick up on how many flops she's had. Your flops stand out more when you have gaps between albums.

I don't really get the fascination with categorising artists as legends/icons etc so it's pretty irrelevant (to me) whether or not Rihanna surpasses this self-defined boundary of what constitutes a "Legend". She's done a lot in her career so far, but I can't imagine her ever being regarded as being extremely significant to pop music - although that goes for the majority of artists.

Well, Rihanna knows how to play her cards, She's making her way up to legendary status. since 2005, Rihanna has had at least a #1 Hit single on all of her albums (Except MOTS). Something Gaga or Bey can't manage to do (No shade).

OT: Rih will be a legend. She's achieved so much and she's not even 30 yet. The VMA Vanguard Award will only cement her legacy further.

she will always be a janet jackson-level icon whether you'd like to admit it or not. she might not be able to dance like janet and be remembered for that, but rihanna is memorable and a huge fashion icon in pop, she's also built a HUGE fanbase which is what leads to legendary status in the first place.

I feel the same way about Drake. His music and whole style is very of the moment. Very commercially successful but I don't see people bopping to his tunes or checking for his music videos 20 years from now.
