Not in sales, not on radio, not in youtube views, not in media attention, not in relative sales (to the other songs, so taking into consideration the sales decline past few years). Rise is #36 on French iTunes after a week. #3 in the first week means nothing if you jump out of the top 40 the week after I don't get why you'd compare those two songs.. Applause had a massive promo campaign, Rise barley has any (yet, it will increase when the Olympics begin, I'm guessing). For a song that's not even the lead single it's already reached some nice positions. And I disagree about the iTunes measurements. Those, as a whole, are a lot less valuable than actual chart positions. It does matter that you're #3 in the first week. That means that that week your song was the third most purchased in the whole country. If we don't count first weeks, then Gaga's last two solo album sales are literally horrifyingly awful, so why would you use that logic? Big chart drops are usually noticed and slammed anyway. They sure were in the case of Madonna and Gaga in the recent past.

This is a big accomplishment for Katy because it is her highest charting song in France. Looks like this song could be a worldwide hit for her. I Kissed A Girl: #5 Hot N Cold: #10 Thinking of You: #11 California Gurls: #5 Teenage Dream: #75 Firework: #7 E.T.: #10 Last Friday Night: #22 The One That Got Away: #30 Part of Me: #13 Wide Awake: #33 Roar: #5 Unconditionally: #38 Dark Horse: #6 Birthday: #57 This Is How We Do: #41 Rise: #3 (so far) Further down on the chart, Britney's "Make Me", debuts at #11. It out peaks "Hold It Against Me" and "Pretty Girls" Source: http://www.snepmusique.com/tops-semaine/top-singles-telecharges/?ye=2016&we=29 Loving that Britney gif!!! Congrats Brit and Katy. Except that this one isn't being promoted (yet), is not even the lead single (as publicly clarified by Katy), and does not have a music video featuring Katy herself. We shouldn't compare it to her other singles just as little as we should compare The Edge of Glory as a promo single to The Edge of Glory as an actual single. 2 minutes ago, Ronlop said: Doesn't quite matter. I beg to differ. A lead single is met with an official campaign. Since someone already mentioned Applause: that song was promoted massively, with not just radio interviews just for the song release alone, also two important promo features on Good Morning America, as the soundtrack of a car commercial, with a lyric video ànd an official music video (unveiled on GMA with Gaga appearing in the studio for the event), and multiple promo performances. Katy's important singles are treated similarly. 4 minutes ago, Ronlop said: What I am seeing is a #9 tracking song on US iTunes and low radio airplay which is why it's safe to say that this is not a successful campaign for Katy's standards. It might become a smash hit, we don't know. Again: what campaign? Second: I can't even imagine that song on the radio. It's not a very radio friendly track, and it's clearly not designed to even be a commercial hit, but to serve as a way of getting Katy's name and sound out there before her era can start with a bang. For a song released with that purpose, a #1 position in Australia and her highest ever chart debut in France (both important markets) is not bad at all. If we don't count first weeks, then Gaga's last two album sales are literally horrifyingly awful, so why would you use that logic? The public does not care about whether a single is a lead single, second single, buzz single, promo single, non-single, bonus track or soundtrack. The public does not follow Katy's twitter all day long to see that a single is called a lead single, nor do they care. Only fans and radio stations care. The fact that this is a 'buzz single' is meaningless for the first week, as airplay doesn't play an important role in first week sales. In all other fronts, besides formalities (lead single vs. buzz single), this single was handled as a regular lead or second single: promotion in a TV show and a music video. Hell, this single got multiple iTunes banners - something Britney's single did not. We were comparing Applause and Rise because ARTPOP and Rise were being compared if this is not her ARTPOP era according to you, it would make sense to compare it to (a single of) the ARTPOP era to see if what you said is true or not. I think the song sounds quite commercial in lyrics and sound. Still can't quite get into the song after quite a few listens. I think its because (to me) its anticlimactic and doesn't build to a point but just sounds flat. Butthe GP generally doesn't care and I'm sure they'll eat this one up like they do the rest of her singles. Currently listening to Joanne

It's not even really an earworm, it doesn't really have any major catchy element in it at all to me. That is something the GP requires in my experience. That and a beat to bop to.
