I don't like the flack it gets cause she says way more than just the word work and the song actually has a message behind it that can help with relationships, life, and at the same time getting you on your feet. I love to tease the lyrics but it is actually a well written pop song. Some haters are just pressed. If All You Ever Do Is Look Down On People, You Won't Be Able To Recognize Your Own Weaknesses. It would just be POP. Like she takes something old and makes it new again. Gaga's vocals in Applause and Dope, for example, is very androgynous. A cross between Bowie and Annie Lennox. Katy is a great vocalist too (I think), but she sings in a very contemporary mainstream fashion. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but definitely Gaga's vocals are more eclectic. With regards to the repetition of "work" by Rihanna, sure it's kind of similar to the repetition of "m-m-m-ma" in Poker Face. Except Gaga uses a different voice (male voice) to accentuate the meaning of the song about hiding one's bisexuality from your lover.

Yeah she expressed her theatricality via the "Buy Applause and show me the receipts" contest And im not talking about the muhmuhmuh im talking about the whole "repeating a word over and over" thing also present Judas Marry the Night GUY Alejandro TEOG etc

Also - Gaga had a contest? That's the first I have heard of it.

Its not really a signature to Gaga (unless you are talking about the buying Applause on iTunes competition)

Bradley 59,318
I love ANTI but ARTPOP is more ambitious and well-crafted. It also had better visuals and a stunning tour, especially its lighting and stage design. Choreography was intense and promotion was evident though insufficient. artRAVE outshines the Anti World Tour. Do What U Want did better than Needed Me, DWUW is a platinum certified song whereas Needed Me isn't. Work is obviously a bigger hit than Applause though Applause wasn't too bad, Kiss it Better and G.U.Y. both underperformed. So yeah, they have their own respective strengths and weaknesses. Needed Me is still charting and I don't know why we are comparing an urban song to a pop song. Also, DWUW may have sold more but Needed Me is already charting better and it's an urban song. Just saying. I find it hilarious people are comparing the two.
holy scheisse 22,332
except anti was new and exciting sonically for rihanna, while ARTPOP was a rehash of eberything gagas already done anti is better than ARTPOP yeah, i said it

ANTI is the better album. People are trying so hard to hate on Rihanna but her album has not left The Billborad 200 top ten since it was released. Her second single of the album is already Top 5. At the same time as her colab with Calvin is top ten. Her colab with Drake is another going to be top ten and her soundtrack song Sledgehammer is going to be another top ten and get her an Oscar nomination. How many other ways does she have to prove herself so people can pay her some respect? The ARTPOP comparison is probably coming from Beyoncé fans. Remember ARTPOP was released almost at the same time as Bey's prior album and now Lemonade was released at the same time as ANTI. Completely agree with all of this! Consideration is awesome! If I can't compare their singles' performance, ANTI and ARTPOP shouldn't be compared together at all since one is urban/R&B, one is EDM.

This Rihanna always has this type of backlash, yet she remains on top because she's considered the "IT" thing in pop music, whatever she brings out, it still hits #1. Work is trash! Her worst song in her entire career and it probably cracked records like no other single of hers. It's sad that GP picks quantity over quality. I loved the ARTRAVE and the Anti world tour. I think the Anti world tour was very well choreographed she was intense. The anti world tour was simpler but still very amazing to watch. Part of rihanna's appeal now is that she is cool and laid back that's why she is so popular now and she has 2 top tens here in the UK with tiwycf and too good and even if they aren't on her album she is still touring and promoting her album so these new big hits are charting well during the Anti era. Rihanna is the biggest star in the world right now tbh. I dont think she could have hoped for a better 2016. I love ARTPOP tho but I prefer anti.
