Derivative art pop. Reeks of art appropriation and shock value and points scoring. Pure marketing and self promotion. Art for people who hate art.

The ARTPOP police have arrived :madge:

I haven't followed Kanye's work since 2009. But please read above as I have come to a different conclusion than my initial reaction.

Kanye is amazing i don't get why so many people hate him. He's one of the best or maybe even the best artist at the moment.

But there is no such thing as the best artist. Art is not a competition. It's not a race. Please don't talk about the best artist as it shows a lack of understanding about what constitutes art. And the process for making art. I'm not trying to be a bitch, I know you are complimenting Kanye's work and vision, but using language like "best" goes against the spirit of art.

This is definitely the weirdest **** a mainstream artist has pulled off in a long time, probably since the meat dress. Gagz better be shook, she aint never topping this iconic mess :air:

The meat dress was an act of political rebellion. Not an art statement.

This is genius!

It reminds me of that 15 min of fame performance Gaga did during the FAME (perfume) promoción.

let's just say Kanye is about vibes while Gaga is about vibin' ...and since you're not high and mighty you experience difficulties vibin' along. and maybe I don't because I don't see her as an entertainer who tries hard to be artistic or avant-garde. I see her as a genuine 24/7 artist/actress i.e. someone's who's really high on his own psyche.

(I really didn't want to respond because I know you're too caught up, I mean, smart to realize how far behind you are, which is the reason I didn't explain it in my post. whoever gets it, gets it.)

and about your analysis on the next page... :toofunny: that's a bigger reach than the ARTPOP analysis I've seen on here (from people who think they understand it.)

Kanye literally thought of that in a second, decided it was cool enough, erupted in front of the people he was hangin' with and they spent the next ten minutes throwing names and ended up with mostly people associated with him and a pinch of shock factor. I was fully aware I'm looking at KimYe and a bunch of actors and I can imagine what the celebrities they're playing would be like in real life. what are you talking about? I always can. there's nothing unordinary about fame. even the grumpy old people who enjoy hating on celebs do that because they think there's nothing unnatural about it. you're making yourself sound like a JB/Selena Instagram fan.

it's just a vibey visual and I kept watching even though I got bored pretty fast, so it's a success, I guess.

I'm one of the people who generally defend Kanye's artistic choices and enjoy his ego, so please, don't try to once again make this about double standards like you've done throughout this thread. I'm not your ass-licking pop "stan". it's just my opinion on how easy it is for Kanye to entertain and how Gaga's ways aren't as convenient, but ultimately offer a bigger trip for the people who are here for her expressionism rather than impressionism.

It's so true. Kanye's art doesn't p*ss anyone off. His art is never an attack on the politics of the day. It's always about him. Rather, everyone eats it up like candy. On the other hand, Gaga is always polarising to the extreme. And that to me is a sign of a genius.

and neither do you.

I never claimed objective truth though. You did.

stop putting words in my mouth. it's not like I can fall for it.

That's literally the only thing you could take away from your post though. Kanye came up with a lame idea in two seconds, Gaga breathes her art. How is that not an accurate depiction of what you wrote?

and if you think your laughable analysis matches what went on in his head, you have no way of proving that either.

feel good with your own double standards tho.

Except I said it was just my interpretation. lol

you take this place too seriously. people can have an opinion without having to defend it like they're in court.

I don't like double standards and hypocrisy. An opinion is not the same as a false or hypocritical accusation. Not in my book at least.

and because people like you think their essays are doing a better job at proving a point and take anything that was less of an effort as fact-treatment, I kept it quiet.

The only time I did an essay-ish post here was because Lord Temptation asked me to explain my reading of the video. So bye at that false and hypocritical accusation.

When you actually describe Kanye's artistic process, as the only way to solidify your original point, as if you were, there you are engaging in fact-treatment. Stop pulling things that don't belong to this convo into it. You claimed that people liking this piece was a clue to why they didn't understand ARTPOP, I asked you to explain and you didn't even reply on-topic. And now we're here. That's how it went.

the only thing that's arrogant here is your conviction that this whole forum is full of blind ass-lickers with double standards who have to go to your obsessive lengths to prove themselves capable of right judgement.

I never claimed this forum was full of them, and I never claimed people needed to duplicate my ways to "know what's right" or whatever. I don't know that either. And as far as obsessive goes.. lol. I don't think calling out blatant hypocrisy is going to obsessive lengths.

In any case, you dragged my other posts in our conversation because you didn't want to actually answer my question. Now you've just decided to swing personal insults at me based on everything but our actual convo. I'd call thàt going to obsessive lengths to prove yourself capable of right judgment, especially when you write things like:

"you're too caught up, I mean, smart to realize how far behind you are"

"you're making yourself sound like a JB/Selena Instagram fan."

"your laughable analysis"

"oh boy, are you far behind"

Even if I act snotty (and I know I do frequently) I know I can back it up with actual solid arguments (even if subjective) at the least.

(1) So the title of the song is ironic? What about the song itself? And the music video?

No idea what that question is supposed to mean.

(2) What exactly is a perfectly ordinary person?

Someone that isn't famous.. like the people in the original painting.

(3) Kanye does not communicate with his fans. He talks at them, not to them.

100% unrelated.

Watching the video for Famous, I actually appreciate it much more the second and third time around. Not so much for what it is, but rather for what it is trying to do. Or, better put, for what it's trying to undo.

Kanye is making a grand statement but he might not even aware of what it is. It's more than about fame. It's about his fame. That is, that he is the centre of his problems, and so this is his way of crying out for help. What we are witnessing is a man reacting against his own image. How? By inviting paparazzi to see his dirty laundry. But it comes with a warning: be careful, you may find something that you like.

I think Kanye is seeking redemption. But from who I wonder?

He has become so entangled with the Hollywood who-had-sex-with-who hype machine of secrets and lies that this is his only way to indict himself. By crucifying himself. So, I applaud Kanye.

How the hell is that illustrated by the video?
