But that's not the case with her Twitter and Instagram accounts where she's gaining new followers everyday. So, Over.

It's an act. Like sex, it is the name of an act. Payola means someone (usually the artist or the artist's managers) paying companies huge sums in return for something. Like on radios, artists or their labels pay radio stations money so they play a song every hour, like Drake's songs. Payola is also used on online news articles, where the author gets paid to praise an artist non stop, or gets paid to trash an artist non stop, like Lady Gaga during her ARTPOP era. On social media, payola is done when a label pays other websites to increase their artists likes/followers to make it seem they are trending hot people. Is it possible to be successful without payola, or its so expected that now radios don't play songs without getting paid? Same w articles and followers and etc.

The thing is how do you know whether or not Drake was engaging in such an act and whether or not people paid websites to trash Gaga in 2013? I mean surely such a thing would be confidential and not made known to public.

Same w articles and followers and etc. Well, it varies on radios tbh. There was this radio host that came out and said that the radio station he works with does a lot of payola for Katy Perry, but they rarely do any for Gaga. He did not disclosed if it was a fan or Katy's label behind the payola. Some radio stations play songs just because, but when a song is new and the artist is struggling to get noticed, payola is used heavily. Like when you change one radio station to another, then another and you hear the same song playing, it is mostly due to payola. With articles, it is really hard to tell when payola is involved, but it happens a lot. Now with followers and likes, pretty much everyone uses payola. Just click on their followers/likes and you will notice that many of those new likes/followers are bots. But again, with payola, it is hard to know who pays for it. There was an article about rihanna how her likes on facebook increased so high in one night. Turns out a private company actually paid for those likes and not Rihanna nor her label. Why they did it, no one knows. Payola is confusing and interesting.

I found out about payola after I read this article, which was discussed here on GGD: http://www.stonebridgedaily.com/2014/04/katy-perry-says-yes-to-payola-for-radio-airtime/ Usually people come out and say it how it is. If they are telling the truth or not, who knows? But yeah, the only thing I know is payola has been around for awhile and Im barely learning about it. Wow this sounds like a lose-lose situation for Gaga, if she does pay radio stations, she gets criticised and if she doesn't, her songs don't get noticed and might even sell bad.
