I was expecting it to be Paparazzi kind of song with clever lyrics and intriguing production, but we got this instead. not saying it's completely bad, but there are a lot of better songs in Gaga's catalogue in my opinion. the video for Applause was nice, but it's definitely not among her best work as well. the highlights have to be that clown makeup (it's really spectacular, gorgeous as a single cover), the choreo and the bits where Gaga is wearing black bra and underwear with brunette wig, messing around on a bed. I think it's not appreciated enough. the song would have made better charts if the katy VS gaga / applause VS Roar drama didn't happen. it s a pop masterpiece. it still sounds so fresh and can never gets old . the lyrics , her voice , the production ... everything.
