Voluntary manslaughter is punishable up to 15 years. This is actually pretty severe punishment considering the crime that was initially committed against him of intentionally passing HIV differs per state but has been prosecuted at up to 25 years. The man that died intentionally transmitted HIV. The man that committed the crime only committed it after he had been severely emotionally or mentally disturbed. It might have even been involuntary man slaughter which is an intentional or negligent act leading to death and in that case the punishment of 14 years was too severe. But he probably got the extra four years for trying to cover up the evidence. At least this is the law in the US. But this wasn't in the US. So who knows.

I know you mean well but, please, do not generalise. This is a strange case.

I can almost understand why he only got 14 years in prison, because if you look at this from a weird angle, he was almost acting in "self defense". I use quotations because it is illegal to not tell your partner or someone you're going to engage in sex with that you are positive for STDs. So it's not like the guy that died was attacking the guy, but he did put him in great danger of becoming ill. And in fact the guy might have ended up with the HIV already for what we know.

Both men are guilty here. But I don't think anyone actually deserved to die. And the ironic thing is, had the guy not died, he would be the one facing legal action.
