I would love it if they began showing intermediate characteristics as they approached the evolution's level, but it wouldn't work for Pokemon that require stones it could work with Umbreon and Espeon but not with the Gen I evolutions.

Or maybe these Z stones have a relation to the Z Pokemon Zygarde, we still don't know everything about Zygarde and it's tie to Sun and Moon. My big question is, it seems like the Z-crystals are the yellow crystals on the box art of Moon, then what do the Blue crystals on Sun's cover do. In the movie trailer that has Volcanion and Magearna, there's this bad guy with a staff, the staff has a blue crystal embedded in it which allows him to mega evolve any Pokemon, having the ability to mega evolve more than one Pokemon at once. My theory is the blue crystal is related to mega evolution. I would love to have 6 Megas on one team but that would be so OP, unless they introduce Mega battles, where everyone has to bring 6 Megas for 6 on 6 mega battles but then again, there are not that many Megas for such a feature. Unless they introduce 50 megas or so but I kinda doubt it. 

Edit: It seems that the color of the crystal is determined by what type of Z-move is being used, which would mean that there are 18 different colored crystals. Though why put the yellow (electric) and blue (water?) crystals on the box art. 

And the question remains what is this

I think the yellow and blue crystals are just there to compliment each other ? I mean they ARE the color codes for the new games.   If you look closely at the trailers there's a key stone slot in the Z-Bracelet so I don't think Mega Evolutions wont be going anywhere in Gen 7 but it's most likely not going to be a major focus of the games' leitmotif.

It will also be distributed in Europe at similar times with locations yet to be announced but the official site lists Gamestop for Germany & Italy.
